    Uh-OH!!!

Ok - I brewed a hefeweizen last night, so about 24 hours into fermentation the activity is insane! This is a bucket fermenter, I can see "stuff" on the lid of the fermenter and the water in airlock is discolored and it's foaming out of the top of the airlock. It obvious the wort has...

    Success!

Just opened the first bottle after 7 days in the bottle... Got a very nice "psst" when uncapping... Good sign... Poured out with a nice brown color (ala New Castle) and a very nice head... Good Sign... First taste... WOWZA THAT'S GOOD! Came out great! Awesome hoppy flavor, good...

    Estimate ABV?

Is there a way to estimate % ABV without a starting gravity reading? I wasn't able to get a SG reading because I didn't have my hydrometer yet for my first batch. I'm going to be opening the first bottle today. The hyrdrometer I have does have 3 scales, BRIX (?), Specific Gravity and...

    Thermometers

Well, while brewing my first batch my Polder thermometer took a dump. It was registering over 150 while sitting on my counter! So now I have a nice, expensive kithen timer :D Any insight on good thermometers? I need something good for testing the temp during the boil, etc (so something in an...

    Success...

Preliminary Success anyway... Everything went smooth bottling. Had only about half a bottle left on the last bottle so I gave it a try... Aside from being a little "alcoholy" it smelled good and tasted good. A couple weeks in the bottle should do it very well.. Thanks for everyones insight!

    Bottling Day!!!

The activity in my first batch has basically stopped. There is a bubble about every 2 minutes. It's been fermenting for 6 days and over the last couple of days the fermentation has steadily slowed down... A bubble or so every second on the second day, by wednesday it was a bubble every 10...

    Gasp! Another newbie bottling question...

Sorry for ANOTHER bottling question, I'm just super paranoid about this sanitation stuff so I want to make sure my process is sound... 1.) Soak bottles in bleach water to sanatize. Should I rinse these or just air dry? 2.) Run the dishwasher EMPTY with a bleach solution. -- If I should...

    What are you enjoying tonight?

Waitig (im)patiently for my first brew to finish fermenting... Then bottling... I have been going threw the Stone Brew menu. So far I really love their IPA. Tonight I enjoyed the Ruinition IPA... Very good, but so far their standard IPA is a little better. I really like the hop aroma of the...

    Second Batch...

Well, since i've been so excited about my first brew I went out last night and picked up a couple Stone Brews to enjoy. I tried the Smoked Porter and Arrogant Bastard Ale yesterday and got hooked. So I picked up an IPA on the way home today and I gotta say, this is the best brew i've had yet...

First Batch is in the Fermenter!!!

Did a basic Ale. Not sure of the exact amounts of the ingredients as i had the guy at my HBS put everything together. Used 7lbs (plus 1 can) of Amber malt extract, grain, and cascade hop pellets. Everything going well so far. Sanitized everything i would possibly use, steeped the grains for...

Hi all, i'm brand new to this and found this site. So far a TON of useful knowledge. A general question about temperature. Here in the central valley of CA it's going to be 100+ degress outside for the next couple of months. The AC keeps our house at a steady 78 while were are home, and 82...
