    Blow off for Better Bottle

Does anyone have a decent homemade solution to fitting a blow off tube to a Better Bottle? I see they have specially drilled stoppers now for the Better Bottle, but I need something RIGHT NOW!

    My dog ate my stash...

of specialty grains. I got all my brew gear out and was about to get my steeping water going when... ...WTF! Where are the grains?! I had left them on the kitchen table with other brew stuff that came in the mail the previous day. Hmmm, maybe I put them somewhere else. Wrong! Could the...

Looking for Edmund Fitzgerald Extract Recipe

Anyone have an extract recipe for the Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald Porter? I know there are recipes all grain but I don't know how to convert these.

    Temperature changes and clarity

I would like to get some general thoughts and experiences with the following area: I have noticed that lagering my Pale Ales for a few weeks after carbonation has basically made them crystal clear in a glass, as opposed to cloudy if I would just take them from room temp and chill for a few...

Great Western crystal malt (15 degrees L)

Does anyone know where I can get this stuff? I've looked around online, but can't seem to find it. I find that certain grains are particularly difficult to find, even with the current performance of today's search engines.

    Hops root system

I am curious if anyone with direct experience can shed some light on this. I was wondering what the life cycle of the root system is like. How much does the rhizome expand? I assume the root system grows horizontally (or do they grow vertically?) , but how much do they expand from the...

    Rogue Hop Heaven

I had my first Rogue Hop Heaven draft yesterday. After about three sips, I finally was able to assimilate the taste to that of grapefruit. I read on the restaurant beer menu that they use Centennial hops. Is this grapefruit flavor imparted by the hops?

    Another Head Question

I brewed a Pale Ale recently that never seemed to have a good head. I always used clean glassware, but would only get maybe 1/8 inch of head. Also there was a fair amount of chill haze. These were aged from 3-4 weeks and then chilled several days before drinking. Well, I left one to...

    Using spices in Apfelwein

I would like to use fresh ginger and freshly ground coriander in a 1.5 gallon batch of Apfelwein. A few questions for the experienced in this department: 1. Is it necessary to pasteurize these? 2. If pasteurization is required, does this not remove some of the fragrant characteristics of...

    hot side aeration

I am just curious if anyone has witnessed hot side aeration in small 5 gallon batches. Is this more of a commercial brewery concern?

    Foiled smack pack

Yesterday was my first time using a smack pack and I foiled it. Wyeast 1056. So I was deceived into thinking I located the inner pack and then smacked it, thinking I broke the inner pouch...wrong! I had to cut open the pouch with scissors and then mix it around. I just did a direct pitch...

    Hot break question

I just brewed my second batch ever, a Rogue Dead Guy clone, yesterday and it's lack of vigorous hot break had me pondered. My very first brew used 3.3 lb LME and 3 lb DME and the hot break was quite vigorous requiring removing the pot from heat quite a few times. In this clone, I only used...

    Crabapple wine

Hey, Yooperbrew. I saw in your sig. that you have a crabapple wine in your secondary. Mind sharing some details? I have two sets of relatives in Ohio that have crabapple trees from which is made some pretty interesting crabapple jelly. But crabapple wine? Is this your first batch of it?

    Behold...

...my very first homebrew!! This is a Pale Ale (True Brew kit) that was bottled with 5 oz. priming sugar for 4.1 gallons so I cooled one and opened after 10 days in the bottle to check the carbonation. The carbonation was perfect and the taste, well it about knocked my socks off how good...

    Blowoff hose requirements

Does the open end of the blowoff hose need to be immersed in anything other than an empty bucket? I wasn't sure if it's good practice to bubble it through water or leave it exposed since positive CO2 pressure won't begin until fermentation begins.

    Better Bottles vs. glass carboys

Besides their light weight, are there any advantages to using Better Bottles over glass? Anyone have any problems with the Better Bottles for primary fermentation? They seem like a pretty good choice for homebrewing.

    When to use a blowoff?

How do you know it is necessary to use a blowoff? I assume you are safer to use one when brewing higher gravity beers, but are there any guidelines to using one? Plus, I have a 6 gallon ale pail, so can one be used with this type of bucket?
