    Starter brew rig from costco...

So I found this online (haven't seen one in person), and it looks like it might be a cheap way in for some who are looking for a starter brew rig. Would need some tweaking but might be a decent way into grain brews for relatively cheap. Anyone actually seen these in person and know if they are...

    Orange Blossom or Avocado Meads

So after a bit of a brewing hiatus (been moving too much the past 2 years), I think I am at a point where I can do a mead batch again. I have a line on avocado or orange blossom honeys and was wondering if anyone has any experience with similar things. I was planning to do straight mead, with...

    Cider funk

Just bottled batch 4 of 6 of this years hard cider and found 2 yellow jackets that snuck in when we were pressing the cider. The cider did have a somewhat funky smell but nothing atypical of a young cider. I usually try pretty hard to avoid letting them in but I guess these guys were just...

    31 gallons of cider

So I just filled my carboys Saturday and decided since I haven't posted in a while now would be a pretty good time. I went out Thursday and Friday and picked over 600lbs of apples from some neighbors' trees and rented a press from Missoula Urban Demonstration Project, our local tool library...

    Best part of fall

So about 4 weeks ago some neighbors and I got together and scoured the area for apple trees, knocked on many doors and loaded up. We pressed somewhere in the 300-350lb range of apples on a press we rented from MUD (missoula urban demonstration project-if your town doesn't have one you should...

    Ideas for some wines?

Its nearing autumn again and I'm thinking about pulling out the empty carboys to start a few new batches. I can get my hands on tons of cherries, chokecherries, peaches and apples for very very cheap or free in most cases. I also have a good source for honey at the local apiaries. I'm up for...

Have to move... what to do?

My mead is still fermenting away in primary and it turns out i have to move in a month and a half. I will only be moving across town but I cant imagine there are any easy ways to move a 6 gallon carboy full of mead is there? I have the same problem with 3gal wine and 6gal cider...

Top 1 reasons why propane is evil

So I'm going to a richard thompson concert tonight and don't have time to start up the charcoal and whatnot, but I really wanted a steak and some italian sausages. So I swallowed my pride (and my taste buds) and fired up the propane grill. Just went to flip the steak and... empty. I cant say...

First Mead and a Sticky Kitchen

Started a blueberry mead yesterday (5.5gal). That has to be the stickiest day of my life... Here's my recipe: 2lb 4oz Blueberries 12lb Clover Honey 3tsp Yeast Nutrient Red Star Pasteur Red Its fermenting nicely so I guess its just a waiting game now.

    Henckels Knives

Only slightly off topic but I'm thinking of investing in a new set of Henckels Twin Pro S kitchen knives and was wondering if anyone would know of where to find good deals. I have looked at the usual Macy's, Linens N Things, Crate & Barrel and on amazon.com so far. Any suggestions would be...

    In Missoula, MT

Hi all, Name's Robert and I don't think I ever introduced myself but I have been on here a couple months. Just a broke college kid here who spends all his money brewing, cooking, biking or skiing. I would love to support with a paid membership but probably won't happen for a long while...

    New label idea

Played around with labels for a while and definitely concluded computer art was not my strongest skill. Instead I decided I will be carving labels into rubber blocks and stamping the bottles with a white enamel or similar. since I'm kinda into petroglyphs, I decided i would do one brewery logo...

    Just Bottled

I just finished bottling one of my 3 cider batches (see my earlier posts) that I more or less experimented with in secondary. had a taste of it and it was really good so i thought i should share what i did. I used a relatively standard setup for primary using the lalvin D47 yeast as mentioned in...

    First batch label

Not terribly exciting but here's the label for my first batch of cider. http://picasaweb.google.com/rustang64/UntitledAlbum/photo#5141707383677855746"><img src="http://lh6.google.com/rustang64/R1sDn58fKAI/AAAAAAAAACM/kgBiWQI13fk/s144/dfghgfd.jpg The red at the bottom comes out better when printed.

    A few issues...

So, I bottled one batch of the three on 1 Dec. and it had an off taste to it. not sure but it was a bit sour, not like vinagre though. i cracked one open today and it had become somewhat more pronounced. I'm hoping it will go away after a while of aging. Also the other 2 batches of cider...

    Grape Pomegranite Wine

I started a batch today using 1.5gal grape juice, .5gal pomegranite juice, and 3lbs clover honey and 2 cups sugar boiled in .75gal water. I used Lalvin Bourgovin RC212 yeast. OG reading came out to 1.100. I'm planning on fermenting to about 1.010 or so to keep it pretty sweet... Any suggestions...

    Stir Degasing

I havent done any wine as of yet however I had a thought while browsing through the posts as far as degasing goes. We use magnetic stirrers in the lab to stir water samples etc.. and for someone serious enough for that kind of investment (+/- $175), that might be an interesting way to degas. It...

    First batch of cider

I started my first cider yesterday. I did 12 gallons divided up into 3 batches (3-3-6) trying different yeast strains for each. For each 3 gallon batch (double for 6gal batch) I used 2tbs each of honey and brown sugar. I dissolved them in some hot water on the stove and mulled that with some...
