    What would mold in the brew look like?

    I took a second hydrometer reading one week in (see my post here) and I noticed some sort of "schmutz" floating on the top of the wort. It could be remnants of the fermenting... but I've been nervous all week about mold. What would mold look like and do I throw the batch out if it is?

    Still going?

    It has been one week exactly and I have had no visible or audible fermenting action. I took an hydrometer reading this evening and I got 1.024... which means something happened, but a 4.3 ABV seems REALLY low... is it still going do you think? Thanks for the help... this weather has been...

    Vanilla?

    So my father in-law is very interested in me making beers. He asked me if there was a way to make a beer that tasted like a vanilla cream soda. I was thinking it might be along the lines of a pale ale... but I'm unsure. Has this been done?

    Hey there everyone

    Happy to be a part of this community. I have done 5 beers since 1999 but have been aching to do more as I forgot how much fun (and how rewarding) it was. I started my latest (6th brew) this past Sunday. It's a Scottish Ale and I'm stoked to see how it goes. Hope I can be a good member here...
