So what score in a contest would you consider disappointing?

Just wondering. I usually enter only beers which I think are really good and have sent in only three in over 10 years, but sent in one I really was a little iffy on this time. My previous low was a 42 and this Scottish Strong Ale (9E) garnered a 33. Since I obviously don't do a lot of them I...

    Coming attractions

Don't we have a list of upcoming home brew competitions and entry info around here somewhere? Thought so, can't find it. TIA.

Amount of priming sugar to add to prime at room temp

I am about to prime a keg of old ale and then store in my basement for a couple of months (2-4) before hooking up to gas ans serving. At the moment I have a small kegerator and have not the space to store under refrigeration. It should maintain a temp of about 62-65F over that time. I learned I...

    natural carbing in keg?

I have an old ale that I want to naturally carb in the keg. Most of my kegs do not seal unless I add pressure to them. How does one naturally carbonate if the keg is not completely sealed? Do you add a little pressure and then bleed it off after a day or so? Or?

    BIAB is killing me!

Efficiency wise that is. I had a problem with too fine a grind and backed off a full turn on my mill and got 74% efficiency which was what I got before BIAB, so I tightened it uo a little over half a turn as I was using up 6#'s of Rye extract I had left over. I wanted a version of Rye Knot brown...

    How long is long enough?

Post below about my pitching ECY07 into a Wee Heavy and the wait for fermentation to begin is now over 40 hours. There is no activity whatsoever. What is the longest time you would give this to start before pitching another yeast to try and salvage a batch with almost $50 in it already? I am not...

East Coast Yeast lag time (ECY07 Scottish Heavy)

Brewed a Wee Heavy and am using an East Coast yeast for the first time. Brew came in at 1.090 and I pitched ECY07 about 40 hours ago. Zero activity, as in the bubbler is flat down on the post. Fermenting at 62F and I know it is a high grav. brew, but with the high cell counts they are known for...

CO2 bottle pressure falls no idea why?

Just back into kegging. In my first beer life I recall no issues at all and a C02 only got filled once in five years, a 10 pounder at that. This time I have a 20# bottle which showed 500 pounds garage (50's) temp when I hooked it up to the Birdman system. I transferred everything to the fridge...

Brewing this Wee Heavy tomorrow w/East Coast Yeast

Brewing a strong Scotch ale tomorrow in order for it to be ready by next Christmas. Borrowed the best of what I thought were the best brewers and added a twist of my own. I think by the time it is ready the anticipation will be pretty much overwhelming. Fingers crossed. Recipe: Wee Ain't...

    Premium Membership extension? Or relacement?

When you re-up for another year, does it automatically extend your current membership a year, or does it replace it with the new one? There doesn't seem to be any option other than the single sign up form. If the latter then a guy would want to wait till it nearly expired before signing up for...

Can I transport a freezer on it side without ruining it?

 Found a 5 cu. in. keezer subject, but only have my Subaru to pick it up. I would need to lay it on its side for the 30 minute drive back. Will this ruin it?

Does anyone make a 5 cu. ft. freezer in black?

Looking for a small black freezer for a keezer.

Conical Use Question/Advice: Drop Yeast or No

I finally decided to use my 6.5 gallon conical I got many years back (long story). It is set up and seems to be quite nifty, but as I understand it one of the main advantages is to be able to 'dump yeast' out of the cone when the major part of active fermentation is over. I've got a version of...

What to do with 9# Rye Extract

I was going to make a Ruthless Rye clone and ordered some ingredients only to decide to go all grain with it. Now I have 9 lbs. Northern Brewer Rye extract and no real plan. I brewed the RR clone for a buddy and am personally more fond of malt than hops. Any suggestions as to what to do with...

    Idea for keezer design.....Doable?

I have looked through as many of the posts as I could and haven't seen what I am looking for (doesn't mean it is not there, I just haven't found it). I really want a tower, but think keezers much more attractive in general than kegarators. What if I got a small chest freezer, did the collar...

Leaving Starsan in a corney three days?

Occasional posts advise caution about Starsan and SS, but never really in any detail. My question is that if I have refurbed a corney by replacing the o-rings and reassembled, can I put a gallon of Starstan solution in it to sanitize, seal it and pressurize it, and then leave it in there until...

FYI: Best deal I could find for gasket kits

Got a deal on some Cornies this weekend, but all are of dubious background and without question need the gaskets replaced. I searched around and found them running from $2.50-$4.00 plus shipping for the ball lock kits. I then found this place and got enough for five cornies with extra quick...

    Cornies for $25 per

Local guy has about four ball locks and six pin locks. $35 each or four for 100. I just need two really. Do I pay $70 for two, $100 for four, or offer $200 for all 10? If I got all (who knows if he'll take the offer?) I could probably move six at $35 and keep four grattis. There is always...

Is 58-60F too cool for Notty?

Hey, I did a quick all grain porter this week to use as my first kegged brew in over 10 years. I got it done and pitched Nottingham as it was handy and I wanted it done in time for the super bowl and I knew it would clear pretty quickly. The thing is the temps here have been colder than normal...

Converted pin lock or normal ball lock kegs?

It has come down to this, the price is virtually the same $105/$106 delivered for two five gallon kegs. The difference is one is a Pepsi keg and the other converted Coke kegs to ball lock. The major difference is the converted kegs have new connectors obviously and the o-rings are new all...
