    Building a draft tower

I am looking to add a tower to my kegerator since I am moving to a place where I can do so, the party taps are getting old. I am thinking along the lines of an oak box 6"x6"x6" supported by a 4"x4"x6" tall tower. I already have the 6"x6"x6" box which I made for another project and never finished...

No yeast and the LHBS is closed, bread yeast?

I went and started a batch of blackberry apple cider this morning with the intention of hitting up the local LHBS only to remember they are not open Mondays. I treated the cider with 5 camden tablets but crushing them up and adding them to the berries when I pasteurized them. The problem is I...

Did my first Coopers Stout today.

I brewed up a Coopers Stout this afternoon as a quick alternative to what I normally do, full boil extract or AG. I figured it wouldn't hurt to have one under my belt. I did the stock kit with 3lbs of Bries dark DME. Brought a couple gallons of water to a boil, as the water was warming up I...

    Ideas for my next cider

Well it is definitely cider time again, I picked up some fresh Safale US-05 from the LHBS today. I haven't decided exactly what I want to do this time, I have done a couple batches of strait apple cider, a couple batches of blackberry apple cider and one batch with quite a bit of sugar added ;)...

    Just harvested my first crop

As the title says I just finished harvesting my hops, 5 cascade plants. I think I did pretty well, I made 4 2'x2' drying trays and they are all crammed full right now on top of a large fan drying. I will post some photos later.

    Centennial Smash or?

I had a friend of mine give me a few bags of hops to play with, he gave me some Liberty, Centennial and some Crystal. I was thinking about doing a Smash. I know the Liberty and Crystal are mainly aroma hops. I am also going to do an Amber Ale which I normally use Cascades on but since I have the...

    Growing for the first time.

I decided on a whim this year to grow some cascades. I am basicly taking over a failed raspberry bed that is roughly a 6'x2' raised bed and putting in 5 plants. The bed is on the east side of the house and gets full morning sun and most of the afternoon sun but is shaded a bit by a tree and...

    Brewcraft Black IPA kit.

Has anyone done this kit? I picked it up today because I wanted something to brew tomorrow and didn't feel like doing another all grain. This will be the first time I have used DME which will be interesting, it says to steep the grains in 3 gallons and add half the DME for 60 and add the rest...

Looking at copying NB Oatmeal Stout

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the northern brewer oatmeal stout kit, I copied, mostly, the American Amber kit and it came out beautiful. I was also thinking about tossing in some coffee that a friend of mine roasts if I the carboy is free by then to secondary it. For those...

    Cider plan for this year

Last year I did my first 3 gallon batch of cider adding brown sugar to make it a little more leathel :D I enjoyed it so much I am going to double my volume this year. This time I am going to do 4 or 5 gallons in the large carboy, this time with out the added sugar because she said so :rolleyes...

Doing my first AG tomorrow an Amber Ale

I went down to the local homebrew shop today and purchased my grains ect for my first all grain. I am "copying" Northern Brewers American amber which I have done as an extract kit before. I am slightly modifing the recipe though, the original is as follows: 6.5 lbs Rahr 2-row pale 2 lbs German...

Possibly a dumb question about hops

In all the beer kits that I have done so far there have been pellet hops, my next brew I have 3 oz of whole flower hops, do I just toss them in whole or should I break them up a bit?

    Want to get into AG

I have done about 5 extract kits and want to look into doing an all grain or two, I have already made a mash tun out of an orphaned Igloo Ice Cube cooler in the attic and I have the typical turkey frier boiling equipment so I think I can make it work without any more special equipment. I was...

Another Igloo Ice Cube Mash Tun

I was digging around in the attic getting my stuff out to transfer my beer to kegs yesterday and found the 48qt. Igloo Ice Cube that we bought a year or so ago but decided was useless for what we bought it for and decided to make a mash tun out of it. Pretty simple affair, I just copied what I...

Just kegged for the first time

I just kegged up two batches of beer, changed all the orings and used keg lube. I tossed them in the fridge and set the pressure to about 30 psi, the tank pressure was at about 800 when I put them in and after about an hour it has gone down roughly 100 psi so I disconnected everything and went...

    Is it an IPA?

I dropped by the LHBS and picked up some stuff, I got a 7lb tub of Pale LME, 2oz of Cascade hops and 1oz of Amarillo hops. I figure the 2oz of Cascade for 60, 0.5 oz Amarillo at 30 and the rest at 5, I punched that into Beer Calculus and got an expected OG of 1.050, ABV 4.9% and 44.2 IBU. Any...

    Simple blond ale

I want to try Amarillo hops out so I figured a simple blond ale would be in order, here is the recipe 6 lbs NB Gold Malt extract 1 oz Amarillo at start of boil 1 oz Amarillo at 50 minutes US-05 for yeast. Simple, light and cheap. At 34.9 ABU it will be a bit of a dirty blond :D

    Northern Brewer American Amber

I am currently sitting in front of my brew pot soaking the specialty grains. I decided to deviate from the instructions and soak in the full 5 gallons of water. I added the grains when it hit 120 degrees and started a 30 minute timer. I brought the water up to 165 and slowly turned down the gas...

Looking at setting up a Kegerator

I have a little bit of money kicking around and have decided I don't like bottling anymore so I will be getting a large mini fridge to set up a kegerator. So the question arises whats the best way to go about getting kegs and all the parts. If I remember the local metal recycler had a small...
