I am going to start my first batch of mead ever, and I found esarkipato's recipe. I only want to do a gallon and was curious if this looked about right to you all? Also would you put the blackberries just loose in the glass jar or keep them in a straining bag?
Same question for the "bottled on" section. would you just let them loose or keep them in a cheese cloth of some sort?
When adding the stabilizer, how much should I use?
Yeast: Lalvin K1-V1116 Yeast Starter: no Batch Size (Gallons): 1
1 gallon batch
First, freeze 2 pounds blackberries.
2.5# Clover honey
water to 1 gallon
2# blackberries in straining bag
9/7/08: Added 1 teaspoon yeast nutrient, pitched yeast (Lalvin K1-V1116).
week 1: added .25 tspn nutrient
week 2:
week 3: Racked to secondary, plus .25 tspn nutrient. Topped off to 1 gallons with water.
week 4: racked off blackberries to secondary.
week 8: racked to tertiary for clearing.
Bottling day. I added another pound of crushed blackberries at bottling (soaked in the bottling bucket for .5 hours in a bag).
For still: Add stabilizer, wait one week, add 1 cup honey, bottle.
