Brewed the Green Flash West Coast IPA clone on Saturday, and it's been VIGAROUSLY fermenting since. I didn't put a blow-off tube on, and when I got home from work yesterday, I actually witnessed the airlock pop about 3 ft. in the air. The airlock was clogged with trub... really cool!

Awesome! I always figure explosions mean that the beer is so good the carboy just can't contain it!

Yeah, it's a pretty big beer 1.070, and I pitched a pretty big starter of 1056. Should have put the blowoff tube on.. it's on now ;)

There are few times when the word "always" can be used when discussing brewing.

That being said...... always use a blow off. :) Always.

I am simply amazed at the amount of blow offs, explosions, wet ceilings and ruined carpets there are on the forum. Why don't people always use blowoffs????????

Cheers Pez.
