I would go with Sadu's suggestion if you want to try washing yeast. My experience with washing yeast on my one gallon batches has been positive and the savings added up quickly.
A month is fine between uses. Any longer and a yeast starter would be a good idea. Actually, a yeast starter would be...
I've done the exact same thing with the three batches I've made with my BMBs, bought at the same Northern Brewer sale with the universal lids.
Honestly, I don't know if it is worth the effort. When transferring using the port at the bottom, I found that the fermentor would crumple in on...
Nice. Just finished a glass of my edwort's apfelwein with honeycrisp apple juice, around 9 months old.
Didn't think to snap a picture before I finished it.
I'd second going with this if you find you enjoy doing this batch size. I modified a Mr. Brew Little Brew Keg (I know, it was a gift) using this method, and it makes for a half decent fermentation bucket now. Better for bottling IMO, but the option is there.
Squeezing shouldn't be a problem, at least in my experience. I have been doing small one gallon BIAB batches regularly since April, and I haven't noticed any astringency in my brews. Almost every batch has included a mash out of 10 minutes around 168 degrees.
Wringing out the grain bag...
No big deal; sorry if I seemed curt. I was responding from work, so the message needed to be short. Honestly, I haven't dry hopped anything myself.
Theoretically, the dry hops are added either when the fermentation is almost complete or after final gravity is achieved days after the yeast is...
I would be surprised to hear of an entire carboy becoming a bottle bomb. More likely that the airlock will go for an unplanned rocket ride as the CO2 takes the path of least resistance blowing the airlock and stopper off.
If you have tubing, it is not too late to switch over to a blow off...
I would let it ride. Even if the cider tastes bad at first, every batch I've encountered has gotten better with time. My dad found a couple of bottles of apple cider I left in his basement three years ago. The stuff aged into a very smooth apple champagne.
If you toss it now, the only result...
Good to hear things worked out.
I had a similar problem when I still used my Mr. Beer Keg. I found adding a second O-ring helped prevent leaking in subsequent batches.
