The black box looks like a PC fan controller to me. You might have to go with 12v just to fire that thing up. There could be some extra components etc. in there that might be looking for 12v. As has been suggested, try directly wiring the fan, then you know where your problem is.
My first batch was some ingredients from the lhbs loosely fashioned into a recipe. I was about 4 L of water low for the recipe, and it tasted rather boozy. Not horrible, but definitely not what I was looking for. The second batch was one of my best.
Hop utilization may be a bit down because of the concentrated boil. That's one of the main reasons I used to do late additions of my extract (never was worried about color.)
Welding with CO2 is often referred to as MAG welding, (Metal Active Gas) instead of MIG welding, as CO2 is not truly inactive. It is definitely less reactive than not using gas at all though...
You're still at the early stages here. I think your yeast is still going to be fine, and 79 is a little on the high side for fermentation, but you wont kill your yeast at that temperature. The beer just won't taste as "clean". It's still gonna taste good though. If you can drape a t-shirt...
I'd believe it about the IPA. The Festa Brew kits are made by Magnotta, and their True North IPA is a great brew. I might have to keep an eye out for the festa brew IPA now.

supposedly cold steeping the coffee will greatly reduce bitterness. I find espresso to be less bitter because the water has less actual contact with the beans.
I actually cap the twist-off returnable ISB's here in Ontario without a problem with my winged capper and pop top lids.
