There is no difference except the price. Adding two packets of US-05 or Nottingham dry would actually give you more yeast then a 1040 liquid yeast starter. There is also the added cost of DME for the yeast starter plus the time to make it. Just my two cents.
I think it's alright to splash wort before the boil i.e from mash tun into kettle. If there is oxygen in the wort it will degas during the boil...or at least that's how I justify it. Anyone else do the same?
For all grain Northern Brewer gives a list of their ingredients and a ProMash Summary online. Austin Homebrew Supply does not but I order from both of them equally.
