    Pictures of hop plants

I'm pretty sure it does not. Before I put a Zeus in the primo southern spot there (right next to the house), I had a Willamette there for four years ... for whatever reason, it just never produced much at all. (Noble hops can be super-finicky, I've been told.) So when I dug it out I paid...

Some trellising ideas (my setup this year -- photo-heavy)

Good question - answer is, I think so (based on last year). It's a lot of trimming, drying and packing work over several evenings in late August/early September ... but I don't really consider it work. :-) Looks like my LHBS is willing to help me sell some of them this year, so I'm looking...

Some trellising ideas (my setup this year -- photo-heavy)

One plant ... it did great last year on 12 lines, so this year I'm trying 15. With full southern exposure and a lot of drip irrigation, I'm curious to see just how big she's willing to get this year. :-)

Some trellising ideas (my setup this year -- photo-heavy)

Been at this a few years now so ... thought I'd share some photos in case they give y'all any ideas on a setup that might work for you. This is Columbus, Ohio -- and everything seems to be doing well so far this year, trimmed the bull shoots about April 23rd or so and the bines I trained are up...

American Amber Ale Red Rye Ale

I just did this about 5 weeks ago ... sap as the brew water in a double IPA with all Columbus hops (my homegrown 2021 crop). I'd guess I got about 15 gravity points from the sap; that's just an estimate, but I would've expected (starting with water) to come in at about 1.065, this one was a...

    Rhizome venders

You might do better spending a little extra money for field-grade plants; they're basically one year old and so will get you to actual production that much faster. My favorite sources are Great Lakes Hops and Sandy Ridge Farms, both out of Michigan. Certain varieties (i.e. Sabro) have been...

How many vines to keep per rhizome?

Going to chime in here with a dissenting opinion, and say that under the right conditions, almost anything is possible. This photo is from my second floor office window last August -- a second year Zeus plant. One plant, ten strings up to the eaves, two bines per string - so total, 20 bines...

    Pictures of hop plants

A new setup this year at Mom-in-law's house. 3rd year Sorachi Ace in the front there, 3rd year Eroica and 1st year Southern Cross over to the right. When we were house-hunting with her a few years ago ... and I saw this patio in the back ... well, if you're in this thread, you know exactly...

Building a hop trellis - questions

Couple suggestions ... 1) You might angle the posts outward by 20 degrees or so ... so while the bases of the posts are 12' apart, the tops are about 16' apart. This will help prevent sagging in the middle, as you can tension up the wire or rope on top without exerting (as much) inward force on...

Sickly Centennial plant. Anyone have theories? (photo-heavy thread)

This is a fifth-year Centennial, over in neighbor Paul's yard. It's not doing well. As the bines come up the leaves are (almost) all curling up and turning into weird shapes. Does anyone know what might cause this kind of thing? Couple other hints ... a) this plant has given pretty decent...

Definitely clipping the first shoots next year. Here's why ...

Bumping this thread, because it's the time of year to snip snip snip! Personally, not going to let them go up the twine until May 1. Worked great for me last year.

    advice for hops in Ohio

The Columbus is now going into 7th year ... it's on the east side of the house and so loses the direct sun every day about noon ... still produced about 4 lbs last summer. The Zeus (now going into 3rd year) is on the south side, so plenty of sun ... and produced some GIANT cones this year...

    advice for hops in Ohio

I have two Columbus plants (well, one's a Zeus, but same thing) going here in Columbus OH ... fantastic production levels and pretty high AA; for an IPA fan like me, these have worked out really well. Used a couple old fermentation buckets as poor-man's drip irrigation systems last year, and...

    Pictures of hop plants

1st photo: 2nd year Zeus. 2nd photo: 7-y.o. Columbus (yeah, I know they're basically the same variety. :) ) They're all flowering like crazy and it should be a good harvest this year. I'm using old fermentation buckets as a poor-man's drip irrigation system since it's been really hot & dry...

You know you're a home brewer when?

The trees in town are going crazy with yellow pollen, and you wonder to yourself why it can't all be lupulin.
