Anyone using salt water (brine) for chilling?

I think you'd run the risk of damaging your stainless. I believe that prolonged exposure to salt water below boiling will cause most types of stainless to pit. I could be mistaken but it's something you might want to look into.

Easy Stainless Lined Cooler Mash Tun

Just an update: The gasket made from silicone tubing worked great. It was extremely snug and a little tough to squeeze in but it's water-tight, flexible, and definitely not going anywhere.

Prototype Previews: Hopback and Heat Stick

Just thought I'd post a pic of my solution for holding the Hot Rod. It's just a $3 stainless money clip that I drilled a hole in and re-bent with some needle nose pliers (I did have to shorten the bolt a little). Works great. Also, this thing is awesome, works flawlessly. On my stove top I can...

Yeah, the thing is rock solid, the welds are beautiful...good stuff.

Prototype Previews: Hopback and Heat Stick

I don't own a keggle but this is how the version with the bend and 2,000 watt element fits in a 15 gallon Penrose kettle. It's hard to tell from the pic but there is around 4" of clearance over the top of the kettle. I think keggles are 2-3" taller and slightly narrower. I'd be a little...

Prototype Previews: Hopback and Heat Stick

Hey guys, First, I'd like to say that I received my Hot Rod two days ago and it is beautiful. I just got around to wiring it up today and just wanted to post a little heads-up to those doing the same because I just created a bit of a headache for myself: The ground lug isn't quite deep enough...

Silicone doesn't bond to PP nor does Polyurethane (gorilla glue...plus gg is messy, foams). As mentioned before, there are only a very few specialty adhesives that will form a proper chemical bond with PP and you're not likely to pick them up at your local hardware store. The JBW epoxy seemed...

4 Tips for Making Great Beer in 15 Minutes

I'd just like to point out that the recipes in Brewing Classic Styles were ALL originally all-grain. They were converted to extract and partial mash for the book. I don't think that it is claimed anywhere that those recipes all won competitions in extract version. And, while it's true that there...

Fantome Yeast Cultured from Bottle Still Got the Funk?

Oh, and I did my yearly re-brew of this recipe last December using Jolly Pumpkin dregs, a pure Fantome sacc strain, brett C1 from BKyeast and 3711 to try to approximate the cultured Fantome dregs and 3711 blend in the original (again Fantome was experiencing a long-term QC issue for a while...

Fantome Yeast Cultured from Bottle Still Got the Funk?

I haven't tried this but... There are several yeast banks that carry a Fantome sacc strain these days which is great-it does make a difference. However, if this is a pure strain and not a blend of sacc, brett, and bacteria then you're not going to end up with a product that resembles the best...

Prototype Previews: Hopback and Heat Stick

Just thought of something: I purchased one of these because my living situation recently changed and the new place isn't as ideally suited to brewing so I'll be using this to supplement my stove which can only get about 6 gallons to a proper boil. Initially I'm not going to add a controller or...

Easy Stainless Lined Cooler Mash Tun

Just a quick update for anyone considering this: I knew before I started that JB Weld doesn't bond very well to PP (not much does...) but I thought that by roughing it up a bit in a attempt to create a higher energy surface that it would probably meet my need (the pot already fit fairly snugly...

Easy Stainless Lined Cooler Mash Tun

I think so-It expanded well out of the holes...It was super humid and raining out here at the time, though. I think I used the Dow Great Stuff (the one for big gaps, not the standard).

Easy Stainless Lined Cooler Mash Tun

Agreed-If I had been particularly worried about it I wouldn't have continued using plastic for the last 8 years. However, there remains the durability issue: the plastic liners in coolers DO distort with heat and I've seen and heard of plenty of cases where they crack (though, again, none of...
