I had some in the UK and recently bought some in a crappy supermarket in New York. Frankly, it was way, way better in the UK. Maybe it wasn't treated well, I don't know. I did very much like the Scarecrow (or Circle Master for you UK HBTers) though, that made it across the pond just fine. :D

I heard from SWMBO (who is an archaeologist) that a bunch of archaeologists found a kind of pit that they couldn't figure out--until they made beer in it. It was a really old brewery and the beer supposedly tasted awesome.

I'd agree with these guys and say that you're looking at a starter pretty much no matter what, so you might as well help your yeasties out and make it now, give them a healthier longer-term environment.
