"THe Brewery"
My initials are TH. My friends call me TH. I have a vanity license plate that just has TH on it. Someone who saw it once asked me, "is that short for 'The Man' or something?" I mentioned that to my buddies and now they call me stuff like "The engineer" or "The brewer", etc...
While the information in this thread so far makes sense, and I'll probably adjust my process accordingly, it seems odd to me that there are many on HBT (who I would consider quite knowledgeable) that do not think volume makes a difference when steeping.
Another thread on this same subject:

Edit: Ok I searched some more (Search for "steeping volume", titles only) and found that opinions on this topic are mixed. Some say it matters, some say it doesn't.
I also noticed Palmer boils water to be used for rinse water when sanitizing with chlorine. This of course would not be necessary if using a no-rinse sanitizer (and he did explain that). Also he boils water that is to be added to the wort after partial boils. I have seen other sources that do...
Ive brewed 4 batches so far, the first 2 are bottled and ready to drink. Batch #1 was a mr. beer kit, I followed the directions, except I did a full boil. It turned out ok, but somewhat cidery (as I would expect due to the ingredients). Batch #2 I brewed my own recipe, still using the Mr. Beer...
I bought a 3 gal BetterBottle carboy for $17 from LHBS that I use for my secondary and I love it. I do primary ferments in my 6.5 gal bucket and can just use an airlock instead of blow-off tube because of the extra head space.
I like 3 gal batches for these reasons:
1.) I can do full boils...
Thanks but its whats INSIDE the bottles that count - and I could learn a few things from you "old-timers" I'm sure. Next time you're passing through Zeeland give me a shout!
Todd Huizingh. My friends call me TH. I have a vanity license plate that just has TH on it. Someone once asked me, "is...
Yes I see what you mean. Its not as bad when I print it out and wrap it because the background words become less noticeable. On the first design they practically disappeared, hence the background words got more pronounced on round two. But I think it could be tweaked a little as you point...
Ok, I've revised it somewhat - ok a lot. The first one didn't print out with all the details very well and it looked a little too light in color on the bottle than what I wanted. Sooo, on to round two (I also switched to "THe Amber")...
Again, thanks for the responses. This is very good information.
I'm thinking a Scottish 80/- or Mocktoberfest would fit the bill nicely. The mild ale recipe above looks good too. I've always been intrigued by the steam beer idea but I've never tasted one commercially or otherwise so that...
Good suggestions. I'll have to start formulating some recipes.
From what I just looked up on wiki, its hard for me to tell the difference between a scottish 80/-, Irish red, or just a malty english bitter (that's not so bitter)? I'm not necessarily trying to hit a style, just wondering about...
She likes malty. I like bitter and hoppy. I've been able to find middle ground with a well balanced amber, but after brewing an ESB and APA for me I wanted to do the next one more to her liking. Her favorite style of store-bought brews is Oktoberfest. What would be a good style to brew that...
