Experimental Brews -- We've all got at least one

thats the best part about this hobby, once you have your feet under you the possibilities are endless. I agree with the previous post, you will want to add to the secondary in the future. Adding cucumber in the boil most likely drew out the natural pectin, removing the refreshing quality, and...

Experimental Brews -- We've all got at least one

I've invented the phrase "hot lager" for lagers made at ale temperatures. Feel free to use it just give me credit! The term "hot Lager" is a misnomer. lagering beers at Ale temps is how we come to have the delicious California Common Ale, or Steam Ale, which is typically fermented with Lager...

Experimental Brews -- We've all got at least one

I would love to hear how that turns out. I have been planning a Rye IPA with pomegranate extract. Sounds similar.

Experimental Brews -- We've all got at least one

I would suggest dry roasting pumpkin seeds in an oven @ 325 for about 12-15 mins, or in a dry sautee pan then adding them to the initial grain bag.

    Why so dark?

Okay, so I have been noticing lately that when I rack to a secondary, most (if not all) my brews seems to darken up in the carboy after a couple of days. I have an IPA in now that has turned deep maroon, well away from the amber I was shooting for. I dont think there is anything wrong with the...

Experimental Brews -- We've all got at least one

So, inspired by the "secret brew" discussion yesterday, and acknowledging that it is perhaps immoral to the brewers community at large to keep "secrets" I wanted to open a post up where any one can share that funky little experiment they have been working on. For my part, here are the ideas...

    Cigarette Ash Flavor

Also, I would check the pump you are using. Is it self priming, or do you need to prime it? I have had similar issues with the first pump I purchased, if the impeller is turning without pumping wort through the heat it creates could impart a tarry ashen flavor. Hope this helps.

    Top Secret Brews

I can say Im a bit of a mad brewer at heart. I dont keep recipes a secret for the sake of keeping them a secret, but rather that they are still in 'design' phase shall we say. Ideas Ive been kicking around: --Rye and Pomegranate IPA (a play at the Elleusinian Mysteries) --Mango and...

    Graff (Malty, slightly hopped cider)

Brewing up a batch of this right now. Can't wait to see how its going to come out. My wife and I took a trip last weekend to Asheville NC and she fell in love with the Green Man cider. This ought to score some major points.
