I poured the wort for a dunkel wiezen straight onto the yeast cake from a porter I'd bottled 10 minutes earlier. Bubbling like crazy 5 hours later. Opened a 12 oz test bottle 9 days after bottling and it is fine. Close to what I drank in Germany; Augsburg Hasenbrau. I know it is not easy to brew...
HopTech in Dublin, CA, has a kit called LagerAlike. I think BetterBrewer is the manufacturer. I've brewed 15 gallons and my friends say it is very close to the big commercial American lagers they are used to drinking. I brewed one batch with primary fermentation in the mid-70s. I don't know if...
+ 5 gallons of California Steam Ale and IF it counts another 5 gallons of the same I brewed with a brand new homebrewer. It was his first batch so I helped him out. Technically not my beer but I did brew it.
I pitched straight onto the cake with a Kolsch and my free beer drinking friends thought it turned out fine. I've never needed a blow-off tube either but I try to keep the temps low so that might help. Unless you're entering a contest I think you're fine using the cake.
Google search turkey fryer. You'll find many propane turkey fryers that will do 5 gallon batched very nicely. I've managed to to make 30 gallons of beer using a single 6.8 Kg propane tank and there is still fuel remaining.
DeathBrewer - your instructions and pics are much appreciated! Thanks for taking the time and effort to put them up. I'm going to do a partial mash Dunkelweitzen and your instructions are very helpful. Cool icon.
Thanks everyone. The fermentation container is actually 3 degrees warmer than the house temp. (68 degrees and 65 degrees respectively). I used Kolsch yeast. Temps outside in the garage vary from mid-30s to mid 50s right now. Airlock is bubbling an avg of 6 times per minute so still not quite...
My 3rd batch is a partial mash Koelsch. Boiled 3 gallons and added 2 gallons of cold water. OG was 1.042 at 60 degrees. The wort has been fermenting nicely for 3 days at 68 degrees. I bottle condition. I planned on leaving in primary fermentation for 10-14 days and secondary for 2 or 3...
