    In my experience a 2000W element will barely boil 5.5 gal. I start with 6.5 then drain off 1.5 and boil it on the stovetop. I'll add this back in the last 10 min or so of the boil...

I don't have much to add that has not been already said, but I have to say that I agree that the basic ale of the Shire would have to be a Mild. But other options would be there, especially for special occasions. Some kind of bitter, porter...

    I've been boiling ~5 gal with the HD 2000W element for a couple years now and have had no issues with scorching, even with big beers...
