    Anyone ever brew w/o hops?

I've tasted a starter once. It was very sour.

    First BIAB Brew Day

How did your porter turn out? I'm going to be brewing this one soon, and I worried about the amount of bittering hops. 1oz of target 10.7% hops seems like way too much for a porter.

    Stock pot

+1 on the 10 gal. You will have to watch that 8 gallon pot closely. It will boil over before you know it. I sometimes wish I got the 60 quart instead of the 40.

How long can I leave my bottles out after sanitizing

I usually sanitize mine days before. I either leave them on the bottle tree or in a big plastic tub with a lid on it. I've never had any problems with it.

    Bottle Storage

I use big plastic tubs with lids to hold mine while they are conditioning. When they are ready to drink, I move them back to their cases and cartons. I've never had any bombs, but I have had a few leakers.

Does anyone else hate their auto siphon?

That's how I do mine. I use a broken racking cane and either use a clothespin or a racking cane clip to hold the tip just off the bottom carboy or bucket so I get a good flow without splashing. The hose can't fall out of the vessel so I have both hands free to work the auto siphon. Another...

    Carbonating with soda bottles

Those bottles will hold an incredible amount of pressure. They will blow up like a balloon before they explode. I did an experiment with a two liter bottle once after racking a brew to the secondary. I scooped about half a cup of yeast from the fermenter and put it in the bottle along with a...

    Gravity Testing...

+1 Don't forget to use your thermometer and record your sample temperature so you can make accurate readings from start to finish. I usually put my full test tube in a cup of ice water or warm water to get my sample to 60 degrees. That way I know my readings are accurate and I don't have to...

Forgot 11oz of grain - tell me I can't do this!

I would do that, except I would boil it after steeping. It will kill any bugs and reduce the wort so you don't water down the beer as much.

60 qt igloo ice cube MLT

I use the 60Q Ice Cube. The biggest problem with it is the hollow lid, and the dead space above the grain. The hollow lid is fine for storing cold items, but is terrible for hot items. On my last brew session, I wrapped the inside of the lid with aluminum foil, and cut a piece of styrofoam...

    Change Collector

+1 on that. A friend of mine had one that broke just from dropping coins in. He had about an inch of coins on the bottom of it when a crack developed on the bottom and ran up the side. Then the whole thing shattered while it was just sitting there. I used to have a heavy one gallon glass...

    flip tops and flat beers

Here are a few tips from my years of trial and error. I have around 100 flip top bottles, half of which have plastic caps. The plastic ones seem to be just as good as the ceramic ones. In fact, I've had a few ceramic ones break or chip while the plastic ones seem to last for ever. I also...

Best response to telling someone you homebrew

One I used to hear all the time, "Won't that stuff make you go blind?"

6 or 7 oz beer bottles?

You can use small champagne bottles. I've seen them available at several on-line home brew and wine supply sites.
