    Rubbermaid Cooler Heat Loss

I have a 10 gal Rubbermaid that I drilled the lid and installed a bulkhead for my thermometer (hate it getting in the way when I stir). I only lose 1/2 a degree F over the course of an hour, if that.

    first brew question..

What is your reason for using a secondary? I use secondary fermenters if I'm oaking or racking onto something else, like fruit. When I do, I wait for the SG to bottom out and hold steady for at least 3 days. Don't go by arbitrary timelines, SG will tell you everything you need to know...

    Another new all grain question.

A longer boil can yield a more caramelized brew. I've heard of some German brewers doing 3 and 4 our boils. Also as long as you follow the same hops schedule it won't effect bitterness.

What happens if primary fermenting temp is high?

Risk of fermenter exploding depends on setup. A carboy with a blow off hose set up is the least likely. I usually install one on the primary. Then switch to an airlock after my first gravity reading after OG. As far as flavors, what swampassJ said.

    Racking snafu question....

Just like everyone else said, just stir with a reasonably sanitized tool. You'll get consistent carbonation.

Blew lid off FV, is batch screwed?

You'll be fine. Even if it is infected, just drink it quickly. It won't kill you. Sounds like you handled the crisis with great composure!

    First Brew Disaster

Do you know what the thermometer's ballast was made of? Otherwise, you'll find it getting less hectic every time you brew. For me, it got easier and easier. Nowadays I just run on autopilot, even with new recipes.

If You Could Only Brew/Drink One Type Of Beer For The Rest Of Your Life.....

Given that I could only drink one style, which would be miserable, I would drink barleywine so I could kill myself faster:drunk: On the other hand one beer is better than no beer!

Tips on keeping the Mrs. happy

Rule #1, set firm dates and times for brewing. When she knows I'm brewing, the expectation is set that it's the only thing I will be doing during that time. She used to come down to my garage and see me sitting, listening to music and drinking and thought,"well, I guess he can do other stuff...
