Likewise here. I do it with a spoon, no strainer anywhere in my system. I'm going to get the inline tri-clover one from brewers hardware just for the odd bits and bobs though. The whirlpool leaves so much in the kettle, I can't see the need for anything in the kettle itself for straining.

Just tie it both ways with copper wire.

Yeah, clean it well and don't worry about it. I actually didn't solder most of mine so its a snap to clean. I just soldered a fitting on one end of each of the slotted pipes so they wont rotate. The thing fits snugly enough in my cooler that they dont come apart.
