Rule of thumb for grain absorption?

You have to be attentive when it first comes to a boil but otherwise you'll be fine. I brewed in an 8.3 gal pot for many years without incident.

    Cleaning Carboys......

anyone know anything about that carboy jacket he is using in the video? Moving a full carboy around is getting harder now that I have back issues. I've seen the straps, but they seem dodgy. That jacket looks pretty secure with a full carboy - I'd be interested to know more.

I have a "Tart" Cherry tree loaded with cherries. Now what?

sour cherry can pair really well with a big stout! complex, luscious, sweet enough to not come off as sour, tart enough to balance the sweet

Shame... Giving up on Fly Sparging

It doesn't sound like you're doing anything wrong if you're getting good efficiency, but usually a batch sparge is drained as fast as possible. Then new water added, stirred, vorlaufed, etc. The shorter time spent sparging is one of the main advantages to doing it batch. If you're running...

Shame... Giving up on Fly Sparging

I brew electric, and my kettle will easily come to a boil before the sparge is done if I let it. I usually just "park" it at 200° F until I am done running off the MT. When I am ready, I let it rip and it will be at a boil in a minute or so. So no worries about distraction leading to a boil over.

Shame... Giving up on Fly Sparging

If you put the bag in inside-out, so that the smooth seam is inside, it helps with fewer pieces of grain getting stuck. I clean both bag and MT in a minute or two with a garden hose. But I am not trying to argue - there are lots of ways to go about the brew day and if you make good beer and...

Shame... Giving up on Fly Sparging

I couldn't agree more! Here I thought I was the only one. But I had been sparging for years before I ever tried BIAB and so was set up for sparging and already comfortable with it. Lifting a hot wet bag of sticky after a mash is in no way preferable in my mind to simply closing the valve to...

    Nightmare brew day

I'd at least do this, probably if it were me I'd go to a full boil. You're only doing 2 gallons - shouldn't take long and it would give you some piece of mind.

EZboil, Power Regulator for Boiling DSPR110

Sure - 15 gal kettle with a 5500W brewhardware element and 1.5" TC. Auber PT100/RTD sensor. Although my system can do BIAB (false bottom over the element) my preference is a cooler based mash tun. I did one batch with recirculating BIAB and temp was rock solid. The timer and alarm were great...

EZboil, Power Regulator for Boiling DSPR110

FYI, In addition to an integrated timer there is also an integrated alarm. I've got a few batches on mine now and it's pretty sweet.
