I use whole leaf. I think the aroma is better than with pellets.

I don't know if it's food safe, my intuition tells me no but I could be wrong. That being said the only thing I use it for is soaking and cleaning bottles, which it does a great job of. It does leave a slippery film and must be rinsed thoroughly. I use PBW for everything else.
