If you go simple, you can get in for ~$125:
$25 Propane Tank
$40 Turkey Fryer (SS kettle)
$40 2 Rubbermaid coolers
$20 Tubing, valves, simple screen, misc. stuff
=$125
Of course this is for simple infusion mashes, which will work for most ales.
I don' t know anything about the NRC markings, but when I worked at a nuke plant in Ohio back in the 1980s, I took home three glass carboys by the water cooler that were empty. Hope they were used for drinking water and not radioactive waste. I never considered scanning with an AN-PDR45!
I picked up a stainless steel paddle at a restaurant supply house for $20. It's about 3 1/2 to 4 feet tall and is wonderful. Next to my BarleyCrusher, it's the best $$ I've ever spent.
If you have a Coke keg, which uses a straight dip tube, you can lay it down if you're careful and make sure the indention for the dip tube is on the bottom. I have done this, but I had the top of the keg slightly elevated for better results. Be sure to follow all the precautions others have...
I pride myself on going cheap as possible, adapting equipment for brewing, keeping things simple. But one area not to scrimp is on a mill. Buy the best you can afford and you will be happy you did. I received a Barley Crusher for Christmas last year. Best present I ever got in my life.
