The sides are pretty packed with coils, but I think there may be some space in the top toward the front based on feeling out the sides for heat, but you will need to do the starch trick yourself.

Have never tried just doing a primary. Maybe I'll give it a try and see If it is as clear. I like my Ales to be crystal clear. Just my personal preference.
Shaking the keg is a gamble. Too easy to overcarbonate if you don't know what you are doing. I just leave it at 30lbs for 2 days. 25lbs gives me undercarbed beer. Maybe my regulator is off a bit.

It is a no brainer. I found no coils in the dead center, but you can easily select where you want to put your tower then dissect the foam to see if there is a coil. I drilled a 2 inch hole after poking around with a paper clip to check for coils.
