I sometimes do a gravity reading before the boil if something has changed in my procedure. I always take a reading as I transfer to the fermenter as a rough check of efficiency. Never take a final reading. I let it ride for a couple of weeks at least then transfer, carb, and drink.
To speed things up on brew day I often mash over night. The wrapped kettle easily holds temperature for 8 or 9 hours.
okay maybe not "holds" but it never drops below 140.
I usually start the boil when I get up and am easily done by midday. that way i can spend most of the day with my kid.
"Finished" my keezer last night. A 5 cubic foot freezer. The collar is recycled heart pine mitered and joined using wood glue and dowel. Silicon to seal. Inset maple for the shanks to go through. They aren't that deep. Originally the were used in a tower set up.
