    Wierd worm infection

We think they're actually flatworms. My brother will pop them under a microsocope during the week.

Only the one bottle - the rest of the batch were fine

    Wierd worm infection

Sorry about the image - I have reattached the image to the original post. The "worms" are about 3-4mm long. We're beginning to think they might be fruit fly larvae. They are mobile, but attached to the sides, not swimming.

    Wierd worm infection

I think my brother has found a new niche beer... One with worms. These appeared in only one of a batch of my brothers Amber Ale, which otherwise was perfect. I think it goes to show, sanitation is important AFTER proper cleaning. He's going to pop it onto a microscope and find out exactly...

Maximum viable brew volume for immersion chiller

Is this 3/8". I find that hard to believe that you do 7-10 minutes with 50' for 10 gallons, unless your domestic water supply comes from the arctic. Even in the middle of winter our domestic supply rarely goes lower than 18 degrees C (in Summer its about 25 degrees C), and without a prechiller...

Band heaters for mash tun & brew kettle

Kal I've had a quote for about a locally made 4kw custom heating element for the equivalent of US$40, so that works

Maximum viable brew volume for immersion chiller

Hi all I'm trying to determine the maximum size of a brew where an immersion chiller is viable. I build double coil immersion chillers on the side, and the largest I have built has been for a 15 gallon brew pot, and it works extremely well with about 140' of 3/8" coil. Now I have a...

Band heaters for mash tun & brew kettle

Kal Thanks for the response. I was originally planning a 4kw hot water heater element similar to yours at the electric brewery. The problem is I'm really struggling to source one locally that will fit in my brew pot (they are always too long). To get one sent to us from the States is not...

Band heaters for mash tun & brew kettle

I'm currently starting upgrading my current 28 liter electric BIAB system to a 46 liter BIAB setup. I've been wondering about the suitability of band heaters for this, bearing in mind the mash tun and boil kettle are the same. The one I have in mind is similar to the one in the like...

HEPA filters for wort oxygenation - which type

Thanks for the post, but if you take a look at the blurb you will note that this kit includes an in-line HEPA filter. All I am asking is WHICH HEPA filter I should use. Secondly, shipping to my location from Northern Brewer is too expensive

HEPA filters for wort oxygenation - which type

Hi all I've been on the hunt for reasonably priced oxygen cylinders for a while now in my quest to oxygenate my wort properly - nothing available in my budget. John Palmer suggests a cheap aquarium pump with an in-line HEPA filter. But now I have managed to source a local manufacturer, I...

New Danstar Belle Saison Dry Yeast?

I brewed a Vienna SMaSH Saison with this yeast recently and was astounded by the attenuation, starting at 1.061 and ending at 1.005,which by my calculations was over 90%. Could this be right? I was very happy with the result although a brewer friend didn't like the alcohol warmth.

Struggling to hit OG... some advice?

Thanks all for the advise How does this (if at all) affect your hop additions? I mean hop bitterness depends both on boil volume as well as boil time? Or do you assume all the bitterness that has been added at the beginning of the boil has been imparted to the wort, so all that really...

Struggling to hit OG... some advice?

Hi all I'm a BIAB brewer. While I thought I was starting to get this brewing lark waxed, there is one area where I still struggle... hitting my OG. While I'm always very close to the preboil gravity, I cannot for the life of me get consistently close to my OG. The last brew I did, I was...
