I have to give up on brewing for now..

+1 to this. You get to pick the temp, and it stays within half a degree. Won't shut off on you after a set amount of time, and the water temp will be equal to the temp inside the bucket. Just be sure to run the heater in some water first to make sure its calibrated, and get the right size.

    Using a burner indoors...

Those are designed for indoor use. The difference in emissions isn't based on what fuel is being burned as much as, how is the burner designed, and how well is it functioning. When CO2 gets to your eyes, your throat, anything moist, it condenses and forms carbonic acid. This is where the...

    Using a burner indoors...

Just remember that CO and CO2 are very different things, and while both can kill you, CO does it at about 50 times less concentration as CO2. You'll want a monitor for both.

    Supplies vendor

I ordered a beer kit from Homebrewers Outpost in Flagstaff, and my starter kit from Midwest. Both shipped right away, even though it was Christmas Eve. Both shipments got here the same time, and I live on some little island in Alaska. Going to place an order from Austin Homebrew next and give...

    Greetings from Alaska!

Hey now, you have 3 times as many flights, and are in the middle of the ferry system! I'm doing extract at the moment, I don't have the space for All-Grain just yet. I think we get a ferry every 3 days now? I know there's a couple other Juneau brewers on here too. I was just in Juneau a...

    Greetings from Alaska!

Yeah, shipping is killer. Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau have a lot easier time of it, but down here in Sitka, its ridiculous. Often times shipping costs more than whatever you are ordering, and ground shipping, and free shipping is never available, or has an Alaska exemption. Oh well, I'm...

A friend had some old brewing equipment...

For sure, I agree with you on all points except that...well, getting stuff where I live is rediculously expensive. And while $20 for a used Carboy might be too much for you, its a great deal here where brand new, one would cost me around $40 after shipping. I wasn't planning on getting one...

A friend had some old brewing equipment...

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the advice! The Hydrometer seems to be calibrated, but the capper slips a lot. I'm not sure I'm going to keep that. I think I'll offer him $20 for the Hydrometer, caps, and carboy.

    Greetings from Alaska!

@hopdog - Yeah, island living isn't for everyone. One good thing is, our water here is amazing, so I'm looking forward to brewing with it! @kugster - Alaska is very beautiful, sometimes you get frustrated by the limitations here, but then you have some just amazing moments where you realize...

A friend had some old brewing equipment...

Well, he offered to sell it to me. I have yet to make my first brew, and I've already ordered all my equipment...but you can never have too much, right? He stopped brewing 10-15 years ago. All his stuff has been sitting in storage since then. He brought his stuff to me at work today, and told...

    Greetings from Alaska!

Hello all. I joined HBT almost 2 months ago when my friend and I decided we wanted to learn about brewing. We hadn't yet decided to start, only that we were curious about it. Well, it really didn't take long to find out that yes, we very much wanted to do it. For the past couple months I've been...
