    5 Day Sweet Country Cider

Ok so I let this go for a full 5 days. FG seems to be 1.020 at about 73 degrees. Looking somewhere north of 6% abv. I could see bubbles in the uncapped bottles so I know it's still working. Going to pasturize them in a few hours.... minus 4 that go in the freezer for cold crashing and immediate...

    5 Day Sweet Country Cider

    a) Nice label. b) I've been searching for cider for about 3 weeks now. Finally found some at Whole Foods. Pasteurized but all natural. Bought half of what they had. ;) Followed the recipe exactly and it's sitting on noddy now. OG was 1.064ish at 68*. This is my first try at cider so I...

American IPA Dogfish Head 60 Minute Clone (AG) & Extract

I just came to see if I really needed to secondary to dry hop. There's my answer. Thanks Yooper!

    Brew Pot Spigot

I have that same pot. I was able to take the tube from the Brewers Best kit and put it INSIDE the spout. However my last run with whole leaf hops clogged it beyond use. I'm planning on replacing it with a larger ball valve to avoid it again.

American IPA Dogfish Head 60 Minute Clone (AG) & Extract

Just a few things to note..... this was my 2nd brew and my first time using whole leaf hops for the Amarillo. Yeah ummm... that didn't work well. Everything was fine up until flameout. The leaf hops clogged everything and I ended up pouring the final gal or two into the fermenter uncooled. Lots...

Starting the extract version as we speak. Wish me luck!

First Brew - BM's Centennial Blonde

It's been a long time... basically it didn't seem to carb very well so I've been letting it sit. I guess I was hoping something magic would happen. Here's a pic taken tonight. After the initial bubbles on the sides and minor head it is pretty much flat. I used 3/4c of priming sugar in 16 oz...

First Brew - BM's Centennial Blonde

Ok, moved the beer from the primary to a secondary after 19 days. The gravity reading I did was sloppy but I'd call it 1.004. Tasted the hydro sample and it was pretty good. Let my 10 yr old daughter taste it (because she's extremely curious about all this) and she wanted to drink the whole...

First Brew - BM's Centennial Blonde

I took a FG reading today, mostly because the suspense was killing me. Since I fermented in my bottling bucket this was a very easy task. I got a reading of 1.004 at 70 degrees and after cooling down to 60 degrees it read about 1.006. The first sip or two out of the hyro tube was NASTY. But...

First Brew - BM's Centennial Blonde

Ok all the bubbling stopped two days ago. I just watched for a 5 min stretch and nothing. I know the answer everyone is going to give is "WAIT LONGER" but I'm thinking of racking to a secondary. Several reasons; one I was fermenting in my bottling bucket, on purpose. Another is because I want to...

    Primary in Bottling Bucket

I did this exact same thing over the weekend with my first brew. I am trying to figure out how I am going to handle it. I'm thinking of going with the secondary for a week before bottling.

Final gravity low compared to label on kit. How to correct?

Read up on hydrometers. I was measuring my first batch with a OG of 1.030 but at 83 degrees. When I cooled it down to 58-62 degrees I was at 1.040, or the target range. I haven't calibrated it so I don't know how far off I am from target, but it sure looked a lot better when I took the reading...

    boil size batch size

I just brewed this yesterday. I think I was a half gal over due to not counting on the half gal volume of liquid extract in the pre-boil. I asked and got the same answers as you just did, don't worry about it. :) In the end I think I ended up with a little over 5 gal anyway. It was easy and...

New home brewer - How to begin setup?

I just brewed my first batch yesterday. I started with the Brewers Best Deluxe kit, a $65 turkey fryer from Menards and $23.50 worth of ingredients. From my very short experience I will tell you this: You don't necessarily need the big kit. The smallest kit (about $65) will get you the two...
