Advice on how to enjoy homebrewing over the years without becoming an alcoholic.

IMO just because someone says they drink 1-2 or even 3 a day doesn’t automatically mean they’re a borderline alcoholic at all. There are a lot more factors with alcoholism than quantity of alcohol consumed. Someone struggling with problems with health or financial which is leading to a depressed...

trying to achieve a cheap CO2 storage system

I agree it would be a lot of work for small yield it would be easier and definitely cheaper to get a tank filled vs the time and equipment to produce the CO2 and try to bottle it. But so too would buying pre-made beer. I think it does come down to exploring different aspects of a hobby and...

First Time Beer Brewer - is this mold?

Does not look like mold to me. I agree with the above. Lid it up and let it finish!

    I'm here for the soda

Welcome! What kind of soda are you wanting to make? The only soda syrup I’ve ever made myself is ginger ale. I made a gallon of syrup very inexpensively and it turned out surprisingly well. If I ever do it again I would try smaller batches and play with the sweetener as it had a pretty...

trying to achieve a cheap CO2 storage system

I remember watching a YouTube video of a man trying to make dry ice from scratch. He used a beach ball to collect CO2 he made from using I believe lye and muriatic acid? Then he used a fridge compressor to fill an air tank. He used a water trap and silica desiccant to remove any water before...

    Refilling a 5 pound CO2 tank

Seems like a straightforward process… The place that fills my 5lb bottles checks the stamped date on my bottles then hooks up a hose, puts my bottle on a scale, vents pressure from my bottle, then refill from their giant tank that has a dip tube.

    SG and Temperature Compensation

Sure hydrometers can be a pain sometimes. But they’re incredibly cheap and pretty reliable. The temp compensation has a convenient calculator too. I too have eye problems and many times have trouble seeing the little lines on it. I will many times resort to taking a photo or two with my phone...

New Years resolution: As a new HomeBrewer, only drink the beer I brew

I don’t suggest ONLY drinking what you brew otherwise how to do research for styles you end up liking? How to know when a clone recipe is off/good/better? The forum has a daily newsletter kind of email that highlights topics that have new acitvity which is nice but like another has said the...

New to brewing beer with adjuncts Christmas ale maybe off flavor? Save or dump?

I just wanted to update this. The problem was my fault researching my notes yielded several mistakes including wrong yeast… which led to me dumping this ale. I wasn’t able to grow any weird nasties in the Petri dishes so… First and foremost was the fermenter I had used was the Fermzilla gen 2...

    Keg sanitation ?

I agree that I think risk is a big part of it… Maybe it comes down to people that can brew much more often are going to be less devistated from an infected brew than those of us that love the hobby but rarely get a brew day ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Keg sanitation ?

I use a PBW cleaner and either Starsan or saniclean depending if I’m manually shaking or using my cleaning pump and bucket. Sure it might be overkill for a keg that previously had non-infected beer but I mean there are also people that rack off one beer and dump new wort in a fermenter without...

    Making a big yeast starter

Given the age of the thread (14+ years old) it is interesting how far the yeast market has really come…also how cheap a 5L flask used to be…

How much dog hair is acceptable in a homebrew?

I brew outside and once transferred to the fermentation vessel, it is only one oxygen-less keg transfer away before it’s ready for the kegerator which will avoid any animal hair before it gets to a cup. But during the boil I don’t cover the kettle so my biggest concern are birds flying...
