    Hop seeds from purchased rhizomes

Located in North Central nebraska. I've always heard that you shouldn't plant the seeds due to lack of knowing what variety the male is. If I don't really care about specific alpha acid content and just use them in small test batches, there would be nothing wrong with using semi-wold hops right...

    Hop seeds from purchased rhizomes

Hi all, This spring I decided to try growing a few Cascade plants, so I bought 6 rhizomes from he state hop growers association. They grew well, and I harvested a few weeks ago. The cones were decent sized, and all plants produced roughly the same size and quantity of cones (except one that was...

    Gravity reading, fermenter, and color

    1) it may drop a few more points depending on the yeast you used and temp at which it is fermenting. The formula for abv is (OG - FG)*0.131 so in this case (42-10)*0.131=4.192%. 2) yep, just looks like healthy yeast ( post binging on delicious maltose.) 3) yeah that will, and should happen after...

Harvesting: how much will I get?

Just harvested and dried a first year harvest of 6 Cascade plants, wet off the bine the total weight was 26.9 oz. They dried down to 6.1 oz on a food dehydrator. So I figure they lost 78% from harvest to packaging.

    Induction Questions

I too have the avantco 3500w unit. Works like a dream. I use a bayou 1064; although I'm not sure on the diameter, it is much larger than the cooktop. When heating water, you can see the heat ring on the bottom of the kettle. Size of the pot really is not an issue other than temperature...

    Cheap sanitzer in bulk?

    1) shopping for brew supplies at TSC is an awesome alternative (especially in rural NE) 2) http://www.stearnspkg.com/consumer-brands/farm-sanitation-products.raw?task=download&fid=530 this is the safety data sheet for this particular product - does not recommend swallowing, and if that happens...

Vessel sizing for 5g or 10g batches

I bought a bayou 1064 (15 gallon) kettle for induction biab, and it is plenty big enough for 10 gallon batches, especially if you sparge using another vessel (ie my old 5 gallon pot). I too have been thinking of going to a 3 vessel system, and my biggest concern is how well the vessels will...

    Electric/induction BIAB

Fired up the avantco using my old pot today. Brought 5 gallons of water from 72F to 152F in 23 minutes (3.478F/min), then proceeded to take that water to a rolling boil in another 23 minutes (2.609F/min). I don't have the data on my old NG stove, but I was impressed with the resukts anyway...
