Add salts to Mash & Sparge water?

Thank you very much for the reply. I am new to brewing water chemistry and still trying to wrap my head around it. It seems from what Cluckk is suggesting, you can acidify the mash to hit certain pH then add all your mineral contributing salts in the kettle. I have always assumed that minerals...

Add salts to Mash & Sparge water?

Martin, I read somewhere where A.J. suggested adding the calculated salt additions for both mash and sparge water altogether when you mash in. In brunwater, the additions for mash and sparge are calculated separately. Is it suggesting adding the salts separately to the mash and then to the...

Thank you all for the inputs. Spike: Are you saying that the probe will not be in contact with the boiling wort?

    New Kettle

Hi Guys, I am considering to buy a new SS boil kettle. I do mostly 5 gallon batches but would like to be able to do 10 gallon batches as well. My question is if I go with the 15 gallon Blichmann Boilermaker but only doing 5 gallons most of the times, will I get poor efficiency due to the...

    Yeast Harvesting: A Novel Approach?

Great post, thanks! One question I have is how can we determine how many billion cells are in that 500ml slurry? We know one vial or smack pack normally range from 100 to 130 billions.

    Filling Headspace - Mash Tun

He has a thermometer with 4" probe installed so it should be taking the reading right in the middle of the mash where the temperature should be most stable. The mash should be colder around the side of the cooler and I agree with you without stirring it, there is no telling. I made a reflectix...

    Filling Headspace - Mash Tun

Just to be clear, you were losing 4-5'/hour even with the lid filled with Greatstuff and foam pads placed inside the tun? I have a thermometer and ball valve installed on my cooler so that could also contribute to further heat loss. I have recently moved to Miami and it seems like the warm...

    Filling Headspace - Mash Tun

I read about drilling and spraying some foam in the lid but am concerned that the foam will not expand and dry leaving behind a gooey mess like many had warned. I did cut and make a foam pad, I cut it to fit the tun snugly that I have to push it down there. Hopefully, it will work.

    Filling Headspace - Mash Tun

ekjohns, When you rest your pad on top of the mash, did you manage to cut your heat loss? I have a 5 gallon rubbermaid cooler tun and I am losing heat like crazy, 7-8 degrees in an hour. I even double wrapped the outside of the tun using Reflectix from HD but It's not helping much. The lid of...
