I know this subject has been discussed all over the forum but I'm trying to determine the best course of action for my particular circumstance. I brewed the Northern Brewer kit and pretty much followed these steps:
1) Soaked 3 oz of oak cubes in 16 oz of Maker's mark during primary...
Thanks. I've only done single infusion mashes. I add grain to 168 deg water and hold at mash temp for a hour. Then sparge with 170 water and drain to kettle for the boil. I did a quad not long ago and found out the hard way about not having a blow off tube.
I wanted to try and brew the recipe below but I'm really confused by the mash schedule. I think what it says is to mash for an hour at 148 degrees and then mash out at 202 (seems high), leave for 15 minutes then drain. Recirculate ?? times until clear then final sparge with 172 degree water...
I brewed this a couple of months ago and it is currently about to finish the 60 day chill at 50 degrees. I took a gravity reading last night and it was 1.005 which is well below the expected FG of 1.012. I missed the OG number as well. It ended up being 1.082. I'm wondering what to expect...
I brewed the following recipe a couple weeks ago but my OG was only 1.075 after the boil instead of before as the recipe says. Since then I have educated myself on all the possible things I did wrong (which were many). So having missed the OG by 13 points and the beer at this point finishing...
Bumped up temperature to 53 which is at the low end of the optimum range. I had read that others liked to ferment this yeast below that like around 48-49 but I think it extending the time in the primary is a great idea.
Here is the status. Still no airlock activity. Took of the lid and checked temperature and it was right at 50 degrees. My Johnson controller is set at 52. Pulled a sample to check gravity and it is only a couple of points lower. OG was 1.050 and looks like it is only around 1.046 now. With...
I did take the lid off and take a look last night. There was a layer of foam and a ring and I could see a small amount of bubble activity. I don't know for sure but maybe this was krausen but it looked a lot like the foam I had after I aerated the wort. I poured back and forth between another...
Finally got my chest freezer converted to be a fermentation chamber and decided to try and brew a schwarzbier. Bought two packets of Saflager w34/70 and rehydrated. Put wort in the chamber and started to cool it down to 50 degF. Let the yeast rehydrate at room temperature until the wort was...
Same here. I'm having same issues. Nice folks but I think out of the last 10 or so orders I have had to call them to get things moving. The excuse is usually "catching up from the holidays" (even though that was a month ago) or something is out of stock and the truck has not come in yet. I...
