Stepping up a liquid yeast pack for multiple batches?

I'd like to throw a wrench into this (I'll sanitize it first). I want to continuously use the same yeast. My thinking: 1 pack, 1L starter. Split off. Refrigerate/store one half, second starter for the second half to pitch. Next batch: repeat. Essentially, I'd be starting with approx 100B...

    POLL: Boil Kettle Filtration

I'm developing an automagic brew sculpture, controlled by Arduino. Right now, I use an aluminum BK and siphon to fermenter, no filtration, just stop the siphon when it gets chunky. The new system will be pretty standard to what others use (eg Brutus, etc) with a bulkhead and valve leading...

    Is there a "Light"er Stout?

Yes...Dry Irish Stout. Murphy's would be another one to consider. Comes on nitro in the can, so has a bigger mouthfeel, but is actually fairly thin and about 4% ABV. So, pretty light (gravity-wise) but not color-wise. Of course, you can make it as flavorful or flavor lacking as you...

    Gravity Confusion

I've started missing gravity targets lately, and I'm a little confused by it because my pre-boil gravities seem to be on-target, or at least in a range close enough that I SHOULD be hitting them. For example, my last brew was target OG 1.065. I had 7.5 gals of (observed) 1.033 (@ 140 deg)...

How Much Rye is Too Much Rye--Brewed--But...

Does this seem to leave most of the break material behind? Kinda defeats the purpose of using moss/whirlfloc if I'm just going to end up with it in the fermenter anyway...

How Much Rye is Too Much Rye--Brewed--But...

Original thread here: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f12/how-much-rye-too-much-rye-385919/ Nowhere NEAR target gravity. I haven't missed an OG like this since switching to AG. I went with 47.5% Rahr 2-row, 47.5% Weyerman rye malt, and 5% rice hulls. Looked like my gravity was a little low...

    Atlanta/Fulton County Water Report

Awesome, thank you. That's actually slightly harder than a lot of the numbers I've seen from other places...not really enough to make a difference but good to know. Again, thanks!

    5 Expensive Hobbies article

Skydiving's not that expensive, actually...(knew it would be on there). The start-up cost is pretty crazy (licensing, rigs, etc) but once you're done with that, it doesn't cost much more than homebrewing. If you get into either one enough to call it a hobby, I'd wager that the equipment costs...

    4% apa

I like using Carapils because it lets me mash lower so that I get better efficiency but still have the body and heading. Maybe that makes it a crutch, but I can't get the same efficiencies at high temps that I can at lower ones. Think of it like a stout, which typically finishes at a higher...

Oxygenating the wort with compressed O2?

Getting O2 into the wort is important, but not as important as having healthy yeast. I used to just use a sanitized whisk and beat the crap out of the wort until I had a good froth on top of it; I now use a set-up like B-Boy's. I find that I got similar lag times with both methods. The O2...

Recipe Critique - Bold American Stout

Man, that's a big stout. I'll barely be able to make 10 gal of that once I finish my 15 gal system! Not a bad idea on the modified DIS. I have a DIS recipe that I make every year (actually just kegged it a few days ago) that I like a lot...I could definitely boost it up a bit and change the...

Recipe Critique - Bold American Stout

I was going for something like Great Lakes' Edmund Fitzgerald, only bigger. I'm going for ~6% ABV (~1.062 OG given my yeast and fermentation profile...yes, I know the 1056 attenuates slightly better but I find I really like the flavor profile of the 1028 at ~65 deg). I wanted something with a...

Recipe Critique - Bold American Stout

Grains: Progmac: Just trying to go with KISS? (actually curious, not trying to fight criticism) Others: Only 2% Crystal? May as well just leave it out at that point, yah? Hops: 47.3 IBUs as written...right in the middle of the BJCP guidelines for Am Stout... More on the flavor/aroma adds?

    Splitting Yeast Packs

Also...I'm confused. Mr. Malty shows that the maximum 5 gal batch that can be made with a single smack pack and no starter is 1.028. That seems a little strange, then, that Wyeast would advertise that a pack is enough for up to 5 gals at 1.060. If this is underpitching (which...I can't say...

    Splitting Yeast Packs

According to Mr. Malty, if I take 1 smack pack, create a 1.16L starter at 1.055, I can generate ~200B cells, or double the pack. If I then pitch half of that into a batch and package the other half, how long can I expect it to remain viable? Do I simply re-calculate and do a new starter...
