Hot Weather Means Hot Wort Chiller Water

I'm interested in trying the post chiller technique. Does it get the wort too cool? I have a 25' CFC, but it just can't get the job done in Orlando, so I'm looking into getting a 25' IC to add on in this fashion. Since the CFC can get the wort to around 100 on its own without a pre-chiller...

Should I buy a plate chiller?

I'm in Orlando and have ground water in the high 70's. My 25' CFC can't quite do the job by itself. I have an inefficient 15' immersion chiller made out of i think 5/8" copper which I have tried as a pre-chiller, but without good results. I am considering getting a 25' of 3/8 copper and using it...

I've been hoarding some hops. Time for an Imperial IPA?

I think it was about .5 oz Simcoe, .5 oz Amarillo per 5 gallons. The final gravity came down to 1.015, making it a little over 9% ABV and it just gets better with each passing day.

I've been hoarding some hops. Time for an Imperial IPA?

Yea, when I saw your original bill of only 7.5# of 2 row, I figured it was a bit low for an imperial. I think the hop bill will be good, especially if it's a stronger beer. I made a 10 gallon batch of IIPA a month or so ago with 30# 2 row plus a couple lbs of specialties and ended up with an OG...

    Polypropylene Cam and grooves.

I know this is an old thread, but I recently was looking at the Poly couplings from this store and sent an email to them. This was his response: So it seems they're only rated up to 160 degrees F, which is weird, I thought they were 250 or so...

    First all grain.. Possible disaster

There are plenty of beers that have an intended mash of 149, so I wouldn't say that's your reason. Just try using a software next time (I use BeerPal for the iPhone) so that you have more precise targets for your volumes. Rather than just sparging with as much water as possible, use only the...

    Glacier - Drinking Water

Thanks, I've been looking at that thread for a while, so I'm going to do some similar additions and see how things go this weekend.

    Glacier - Drinking Water

Geer, do you do AG brewing? I've read all over the place that RO water will not work well for mashing because it needs Calcium to convert the amylase enzymes... Have you had any efficiency issues when using the RO water?

    Glacier - Drinking Water

Great to know. Thanks, I think I'm going to give that a try.

    Glacier - Drinking Water

I'd be interested to hear if anyone's used this before also. I have one of these machines right next to my house, and it's very convenient to fill up a 5G jug of it. It does mention RO in the fact sheet... but does that mean it's completely void of any minerals? Is all RO created equally or...

    Hearts Homebrew turnaround?

OK thanks, I'll give that a try. If I find that I'm still short, what would you suspect? Mash pH? Without a pH meter, it sounds like it might be difficult to measure this very well. Hearts Homebrew seems to only have pH 7.01 and 4.01 buffer... not 5.2 buffer, would I add both of them to reach...
