I'm on my second keg of this. Brewed one with wlp008 east coast ale and one with notty. I really like both of them. I pick up a little more of the nutty and silky in the notty batch. I guess my vote goes to the notty. Great recipe lil sparky!:rockin:
For me simcoe is definately piney, and good! If you want to know what chinook taste like go out and grab an Arrogant Bastard. Resiny is one of those desciptions I never could quite grasp until I had an AB.
I did an 5 gallon APA that had 0.5# of honey malt with the rest being base malt. This was way too much honey malt and made the beer too sweet. There's some honey taste I get from it but not as much as I was expecting.
Be careful with that malt is all I have to say.
+1 - I just did 24 lbs of grain at 1.25 qts/lb in a 10 gal. Home Depot mash tun last weekend with no problems. It was pretty full though.
For an IIPA I would just single infusion mash and batch or fly sparge.
Kegged this a week ago. The sample tasted promising, I haven't had Terapin in a while but it definately tasted similar from what I remember. Another week or so on the gas and I'm ready to do a side by side. I will be sure to post my results.
+1
With the cascade and centennial I don't think of an ESB. But what the heck, enter in both and see what happens. Glad to hear the beer came out good. It makes brewing that much better when made yourself a good one! Good luck.
+1 hahaha. I got into this hobby to make and drink good beer. I really do enjoy the process and science of the craft. Finding ways to save some money is an added bonus IMO. I did just build a stainless steel rig so I guess that pretty much shows how much I'm worried about brewing cheap beer.:D
If you are more focused on the hops why not use a simple APA grain bill. Something like 2-row and 5-7% C60. At least this way the malt won't be as one dimensional.
I blindly used 5.2 for a couple years. I recently started using Palmer's EZ water spreadsheet with mineral adjustments to control mash Ph and have had zero change in efficiency. Personally I think the 5.2 was a waste. I've also read a bunch of other testimonials of it not doing much. Just my...
