    Ways to save on brews

bigadam has picked out a very popular, simple-to-brew and moderately priced recipe for a Centennial Blonde: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f66/centennial-blonde-simple-4-all-grain-5-10-gall-42841/ In the spirit of HBT fraternity I will be brewing this recipe as well! I call on all cash-strapped...

    Ways to save on brews

Small money saver. This one will add up over time. Don't throw out that starsan each session. Mix up a batch of starsan and keep it around. Using ph test strips you can check to make sure it still has sanitizing potential. Narrow range ph test strips are available on eBay. From reading around...

Hey, who said I didn't have a budget!? You should see where I live! I'll bet your SWMBO keeps a nice place!

    Ways to save on brews

I'd send you some pennies, but we stopped making those yesterday. I only mean it as good nature ribbing. As a bachelor it's my duty to tease those with a SWMBO :) I don't really think it's a waste of time. It's kinda fun to think about the low cost angle. :mug:

    Ways to save on brews

This thread is hysterical. HBT represents a huge brain trust. And here it is wasting synapses trying to figure out how to squeeze a few dollars. This is not what homebrewing is about. Maybe a new hobby? SWMBO might get you a metal detector? There might actually be a RETURN on that hobby!

whiskeyjack is on the right track. :)

    first all grain and problems

You should take a Specific Gravity reading. Make sure that it's stable over a couple of days before bottling. The beer will look like it's getting darker from top to bottom as the yeast drops out. If you want to make a bigger beer next time use more grain, or add some extract to the kettle.

    first all grain and problems

6lbs. of grain for a 5 gallon batch is not very much. You did a Brew-in-a-bag? I'm not surprised at your O.G. The beer is probably fermented out. I wouldn't worry, but this will be a very light beer.

    Ways to save on brews

She's nickle and dime-ing you on brewing ingredients?! :drunk: Maybe a divorce? Yeast washing will save you. I refer you to this illustrated post on the topic. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f163/yeast-washing-illustrated-41768/ Also, brew beers without lots of hops, but lots of alcohol...

    New Albion Ale clone

I think I will brew the clone from BYO soon too. Seems like it would be good for spring time.

    Improved boiling on the stovetop!

Cool. Thanks for the reply. I am able to get a boil going on my stove with the lid partially covering the kettle. But I am going to try this material and see what kind of results I get.

ajitnair, What material did you use to wrap your kettle in? There are a few different materials discussed in the thread. I'm curious which one you tried out.
