Getting a gravity reading from a carboy.

Does anyone have any cool tricks for pulling enough beer from their primary/secondary glass carboy to get a gravity reading?

How short is too short for IPA fermentation?

Thanks for the info everyone. I feel better about my beer now. I racked it into a secondary and will be dry hopping on Friday then sit for a week before bottling. Does anyone have a target FG reading that I can shoot for with this brew? Not that I'll be exact but it would be nice to have a...

How short is too short for IPA fermentation?

I have a Ruination IPA clone in my primary and after the violent fermentation was over, I placed the air lock on. After only nine days of fermentation, there is less than one bubble coming out of the air lock every few minutes. Did this ferment faster than it was supposed to? I was under the...

What fruit to use in my wheat beer?

I have a Belgian wheat fermenting right now and I'm going to rack it on to some fruit soon. I'm leaning toward using grapefruit shavings (possibly boiled in H2O before adding to the secondary). Before I go that route, I wanted to see what others have used in the past and see if there's a better...

    Bad OG (Hydrometer) Readings?

Since I am doing partial (2 gal) boils, I thought about using the same scale when taking my hydrometer reading (eg. 2 cups wort : 3 cups H2O). It seems that this might give me the reading I'm looking for without taking the thinner mixture off of the top. Has anyone done that or think it would work?

    Bad OG (Hydrometer) Readings?

I deviated from the recipe I bought to make it interesting but it never gave me an estimated OG. I'm trying to take the reading at 68 deg F. but adjusting for temp when it gets close enough.

    Bad OG (Hydrometer) Readings?

I brewed my second batch of beer yesterday and for the second time seem to be getting an OG reading that doesn't seem correct. The first batch, I took the reading by pouring a small amount out of the carboy immediately after the wort and H2O were in. The second batch, I took my reading the same...
