Maví brewing - Puerto Rican Root Beer

Hey, everyone... This is a question about maví or mauby, a fermented brew from the Caribbean. One of my co-workers is a native Puerto Rican, and was wondering if he could find a source for a maví starter culture here in the US. Traditionally this low-alcohol soda-like brew is inoculated...

    1-Gallon Brewers UNITE!

UPDATE: When I finally bottled this, I got five whole bottles of beer. I opened the first one on Thursday, which was a little early but I was dying to try it... two thumbs up. Now all I gotta do is figure out how to make five gallons of the stuff.

Careful... you might fall into your equipment and strain yourself...

You know you're a home brewer when?

I drink my homebrew out of a glass, but I pour it out of a bottle.

    Passed an Important Brewing Milestone!

From the time I started brewing, my wife has been skeptical. She doesn't like the mess I make of "her" kitchen, and she begrudges the square footage of space my batches, ingredients, and paraphenalia take up in the storage closet and the fridge. But tonight I just had a breakthrough. I had...

    1-Gallon Brewers UNITE!

I make a starter, and only use part of it. It really harms nothing if you overpitch anyway.

    1-Gallon Brewers UNITE!

My first-ever brew was from a Brooklyn Brew Shop kit, which was all-grain and one gallon. I never really looked back after that. Any 5-gallon recipe will do, just reduce ingredient quantities by 80%.

    1-Gallon Brewers UNITE!

I sanitize my hydrometer thoroughly, and plunk it (gently) right into the fermenter.

    Apples and Oranges - A 1-gallon batch

Sampled this batch today... fermentation is still chugging along, but the sugar in the brew is just about gone. The dominant flavor now is a vomit-like sourness. That's to be expected in the first week of fermentation, I suppose, but now I am reminded of why many cider-brewers avoid juice with...

WLP 004 in a graffor cider?

Keep it in its preferred temperature range and administer yeast nutrients generously, and you shouldn't have any trouble.

    Daddy-daughter brewing

I have my youngest hold the racking cane and tip the pot when I'm siphoning out the last bit of beer from the bottling pot (which by day is my wife's favorite stock pot). She thinks homebrewing is cool. Then again, she's ten.

    I love PBR.

When I was a kid, my dad and his friends drank PBRs. Probably the first drink of beer I ever snuck behind dad's back was a PBR. Not bad with a plate of steamed shrimp done up Maryland style... and I'm not really a PBR fan.

Ancient Braggot? (i.e. bread yeast in braggot)

In your place I would start making bread with US-05... problem solved!
