    Distilling and water

i've never had this bandaid smell or flavor. for brewing or the few batches i've reduced. but i actually like the taste of my tap water. not so much in the next city though. so i get how each municipality's water tastes different despite it all coming from the same spot around here. It's because...

My Ugly Junk- Corona Mill Station...

Looks like a washer motor. The little bowl on top of a motorized mill is funny to me. I’ve got a 5 gallon water jug with the bottom cut off as a hopper for mine now and looking for a way to use a motor or strap my drill down after sinking it in a table.

[barley whiskey] Do you taste what you put into the still?

I ran about 12 gallons of old beer from various kegs i hadn't emptied as my first real attempt after the sacrificial run. i got about a cup and a half that didn't taste like stale beer and wet cardboard. an actual corn / wheat / barley mash came out much much nicer.

    First time distilling

yep. strip then do a cut run. for the most part you will probably be past the foreshots by the time you get something coming off that smells and tastes decent. i just get a drop on my finger and rub into my hands to smell like hops then i'll get another drop and have a taste. you can tell if you...

    Just Wondering

i went with a stainless milk jug, a tri-clamp bulk head for the lid, and a copper kit off ebay with a tri-clamp ferule. the beauty about the milk jugs is the lid fits all sizes so you can get a small 3 gallon one then go up to a 15 if you decide 3 gallons is just too small and you won't have...

    28 cones, give or take

this sounds exactly what happened to mine. they grew fast and tall early on then just didn't get thick or throw out side arms and what flowers did come out turned brown right away. last yr i got lbs dried from these plants. only thing i can think of is the trees have just gotten too big in the...

Your chance to trial a FREE Pinter!

i'm going to the lake for a week. my choices are drop a hondo (or more) at the beer store or 2 weeks before i go brew up 20 gallons of wheat beer and finish it 4 different ways at half the cost for what 4x the amount? that's why i love brewing my own.

    New hop varieties

I use a mixture of neem oil and insecticidal soap on mine whenever i see anything munching my plants. we usually get rain around harvest time so i don't worry about it. also, hose on the hops is a good way to wash aphids away early morning or late evening so between that and rain i haven't had...

    T58 needs more love

Pardon my ignorance but wouldn’t one yeast colony try to destroy the other?

    Omega Lutra yeast?

All my lutra brews fermented outside in summer and hit close to 90. No temp control just a tarp to keep it out of direct sunlight. Took 2 to 3 days for most brews but usually took them down to 1.002-1.004. Never had any off flavors.
