    Pliny Recipe Feedback

Here's how mine worked out for my 1.064, as you see the CS is already in the recommended range: 6lb DME 75% .5lb Carapils 6.25% .5lb C-40 6.25% 1lb Corn Sugar 12.5% Here's what happens when I remove the CP and adjust up to 1.065: 6.25lb DME 80.65% .5lb C-40 6.45% 1lb Corn Sugar...

Great input! I will give that a try on the next one I do.

    Pliny Recipe Feedback

It's argued that carapils isn't needed at all in an extract batch, so yes, it may balance out the additional sugar. Might even be too much. It crossed my mind. But I figured it won't ruin the beer. It will get drank no matter what! It will end up a beer with a HUGE hop profile. I know I don't...

    Pliny Recipe Feedback

It really depends on your brewhouse efficiency on what quantity of ingredients you use. The recipe that Vinnie gives out only gives you percentages; 87% 2-Row, 4% C-40, 4% CP, and 5% Dextrose. When I plug these numbers into BeerSmith, I get 11lb 2-Row, .5lb C-40, .5lb CP, and .63 Corn Sugar to...

    Pliny Recipe Feedback

I am dry hopping in the primary. I hadn't even checked gravity during the first week, but after 9 days it was done, so I added the 3oz first dry hop. I've been swirling the carboy because that amount of leaf hops just want to float. If you are using pellet, shouldn't be an issue. I'll be adding...

    Pliny Recipe Feedback

I did a Pliny extract 2 weeks ago and your recipe looks similar to mine, but almost half. I think you have twice as much DME listed as you need. Run that through BeerSmith or something. You should be shooting for 1.070.I used a lb of corn sugar in my 5g batch cause I wanted it to dry it out more...

Fresh zest....to "dry zest" or late addition boil?

Quite some time ago I did a wheat with cascade and "dry zested" with 2 lemon peels worth of zest (just the very outer zest, no white). It turned out good, the lemon was a good match with cascade. I added the zest to the secondary, but have not used a secondary (or zest) since. My wife really...

    Yeast harvesting - a NON-slant method

Great to hear. I had kinda planned this out in my head to do one day and this was my game plan. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't something I was missing.

    Yeast harvesting - a NON-slant method

Maybe this was asked, but why can't you just mix up some DME and water, add that to the jars, add the jars with loose lids to the pressure cooker and cook for 20 min at 15psi? Then turn off the heat and then wait for everything to cool. The lids should seal themselves to the jars as everything...

    Calculator for stepped starters

Ya, that's what I figured. And yes, you really shouldn't make a starter with dry, but when working with something so old, I really just wanted to make sure it was good. Since I figured it was about half viable, it only gave me as many cells as liquid would, so not enough to hydrate and pitch...

    Calculator for stepped starters

Ya, I tried that, but the second step shows 0 growth because the inoculation rate turned red. Now I see why, I had over 200 as a result. Really, my problem is I have a 2 year old packet of dry I'm playing with, I really don't even know where to put my initial number since according to the...

    Calculator for stepped starters

Great calculator, but I have a question. What numbers do I use for this situation: 1st step: 1000ml/100g starter 2nd step: add another 1000ml/100g starter to it 3rd step: decant off the 2000ml of liquid, then add another 2000ml/200g starter to the yeast

    Starter step up methods

Ok, now this I didn't really think of. Maybe adding another liter of 1.040 to a fermented liter of 1.010 isn't the best bet since you'd end up at 1.025. So the next batch should be around 1.070 added to 1.010 would give 1.040 again and more sugars to eat. This would essentially turn the spent...

    Starter step up methods

Perfect, I was hoping I didn't need to decant, it won't leave me with enough time. Adding another 1000ml to it will get me where I need to be.
