Beersmith - Issue with Sparge volume

The problem here is the way that Beersmith shows the mash profile. It gives you a mash out that takes the water:grain to 2.0. This does not give you enough liquid to finish the batch. But if you print out the brew sheet it shows you in the last area of the page that you need to add "insert...

    lactose or beta lactose?

Do any of you know if the process that dries out the lactose turns this in to beta-lactose? Do the companies start with pastuerized milk or raw?.... or milk at all?

What is growing on my beer?

I haven't tasted it yet. I had intended to get a little flavor in the Saison base beer by adding the wild and the fruit aspects. But I thought it would be a slight bubbling and I would just let it go to taste. It is still Krausen heavy. Now i moved it out of my brewery and into the house...

What is growing on my beer?

Hey guys. I made a saison 6 or 8 months ago. I made too much and put a gallon in a jug with a little bit of solution in the airlock. I intentionally let the airlock dry out to let the wild in. In an effort to try something fun, I threw in some blackberries on the beer about a month ago. I...

    Adding Orange Peel to Fermenter

Thanks guys. I will prolly toss a little of both peel and the fruit into the primary. It is all done now, but this way I can rack into the Brightninger (I like that name, sounds more made up) without having to carry the pulp and such with it. It is a Saison beer, so it shouldn't hurt to keep...

    Adding Orange Peel to Fermenter

What is the best way to add orange peel to a beer already in the fermenter? Should I cook them at 170 degrees for a bit to kill germs? Should I just toss them in? Should I forget about it since the beer is almost a week in the fermenter already?

    Built an immersion chiller today

Thanks for this post. I plan on making a wort chiller soon. I have a pump that we use for circulating the dogs water in the horse trough out back. I figure I will build this unit to connect to that pump and couple the chiller with an ice bath. Hopefully I can increase the speed of the cool...

Best way to clean bottle caps?

Ok. I am learning as I go with brewing and sometimes make some bad assumptions. I have cleaned bottle caps with iodophor and I have cleaned them with vodka. I ran out of vodka and iodophor in the same batch and i used the lightest alcohol I had left. This was a light rum. I notice a rummy...

    Drilling through door of fridge...

HA! Thanks. Those Gods must hang out at St Arnold's house when they are off work, huh? I didn't feel like there would be any problems, but I figured better to ask than blind cut. I will post again to tell my success or failure.

    Drilling through door of fridge...

Kegerator Project. Alright. I brewed a beer, and it is fermenting nicely. I cleaned out the kegs tonight and they are ready to go. I have all of the lines fitted with easy adapters so they quick fit onto each of the kegs. I have all of the fittings necessary to send the fluid lines into some...

    kegging and/or lagering???

I am looking to add a third fridge to our collections of two fridge/freezers and one deep freezer. We mostly cook at home, so we store lots of goodies. I currently get one of the fridge/freezers for beer and beer only, but my next step in brewing will beer using lager yeasts or kegging the...
