I used a PVC spider without incident until I brewed a double IPA. The recipe called for 8 ounces of hops over the course of the boil, and about 5 minutes before flameout the PVC got so soft that the weight of the hops collapsed it and it fell into the pot. Beer came out fine, but I replaced it...
Don't dump it, you can fix it! I had exactly the same thing happen to me, SS clamp on a dry hop bag with a screw that was not SS fell into beer. Strong metallic aftertaste to the beer.

Ditto on the above. Made a 2 liter starter and took off pretty vigorously and smelled terrible. Checked it 10 days later and the fermentation had stalled about halfway through, so I shook it up and it took off again (gummed up the blowoff tube and popped the lid off my fermentation bucket)...
