    Spelt and Buckwheat

Hey, I've got this book and never noticed that recipe toward the back! Reading it now, it strikes me as something heading in the same direction as the New Belgium 1554 clone that I've been tinkering with, but likely to have a silky body to back up those roasted grains. You've inspired me to...

    Triticale flakes

Update - My triticale and wheat beers are finally carb'ed so I cracked the two side-by-side; both are good stuff. They used an identical recipe, just the different adjuncts mashed in with a regular single step infusion resting at 152. My real cereal mash version isn't in bottles yet to...

    Eneron Turbo pot heating efficiency?

Has anyone tried out the Eneron Turbo pots who can give a report on their heating efficiency? I also found this interesting article: http://appliancemagazine.com/content/2257 which makes me think that maybe there really is something to be gained by pot design. The Eneron pots are pretty...

    Freezing a cereal mash

This was pretty successful so far. I thawed and completed the brew, and it's in the fermenter now. At 48 hours the 1 gal bucket, filled to the brim, was room temperature. I'll try 36 hours next time. My efficiency was consistent with getting about 73% from the adjunct which was raw...

    Freezing a cereal mash

That's cool that you were able to split up the mash with no ill effects; that's what I'm looking for myself. I get too busy with kids on the weekends, so it is actually easier to find time on weekday evenings. But not really enough time for a cereal mash. As long as conversion is good, I'll...

    Freezing a cereal mash

Next bump. Since no one confessed to trying it, I decided to give it a whirl with a small test batch. My triticale cereal mash is complete and in a bucket in the chest freezer, and when I'm ready to finish the brew we will see how long it will take to thaw. My main observation is that...

    Triticale flakes

Thanks! I'm finally getting around to planning something with the 5 gal bucket of triticale since Spring approaches and wheat/rye beers are warm weather beers for me. Mine is unflaked so I'll probably be cereal mashing it. Poking around on the web I see that the research that's out there...

    Summit rhizomes

Arise sleepy thread! Willamette Valley Hops has summit rhizomes this year. I just received 4. It will be interesting to see their growth habit over the next year or two

Volume of Crushed grains vs. Uncrushed

+1 on 1 qt per pound. I'm a scant qt pre-crush and a proud qt crushed. I would have said 2.5 gal was a hair under 10 lbs of grain, which my be why you thought you had a low OG.

    fruit juice for a starter

For cider I haven't needed a starter with Nottingham or 05 and I don't notice much difference in pitching it directly vs pitching on the previous cider's yeast cake (which I often do). The sugars are very ferment-able compared to beer wort, and either one will drive it all the way down to dry...

    Triticale flakes

To resurrect the thread, did you ever brew with it Capt'n, and how did it work out? My neighbor who bakes bread got a 25 lb sack of triticale thinking she would like it over the rye she's been using, and decided she didn't like it and was just going to feed it to the horses. She offered it...

Results from juice, yeast and sugar experiments

A couple of pages ago I mentioned that I've been doing 1 gal batches and bottling them in PET bottles. For the last couple of batches I've intentionally not crashed the cider after it's finished, and instead I've been racking straight into Mr Beer PET bottles to see if I can bottle carb. I...

Results from juice, yeast and sugar experiments

CvilleKevin, +1 on thanks for this thread to give me the confidence to start working on Cider.for SWMBO. I'm on batch 4 or 5 now, with pretty consistent results, using either Whole Foods, Knudsen or Santa Cruz organic cider, Nottingham and Turbinado (we get it in 25 pound bags for baking)...

Will a propane grill boil wort?

I do this with a 20L pot; I typically try to stuff two 4.5 gal pre-boil batches and boil them down to 3.5-4 gal. I didn't catch your grill make or BTU's; My Weber only puts out 12.5 Kbtu's and it does take a long time to reach a boil, but I can interleave mowing the grass while it's coming up...
