I picked up a 12er of New Belgium last year sometime in hopes that I'd get good beer and bottles but after washing them I'd say 4 or so had weird hairline cracks from what seemed like a manufacturing defect.

I've gotten krausen bubbling out the top of my flask at that level a couple times before. If you have any, a couple drops of fermcap will help keep it under control.

I have a wing capper and I always go for Widmer or Sam Adams. Not a big Newcastle drinker these days but their bottles are surprisingly sturdy. They're clear though so I use them for Cider.

NorthernBrewer has a tasty Chinook IPA kit that I've brewed a couple times. As the name implies, chinook is the only hop variety used in the boil and for dry hopping.

In this particular case I'm with ObsidianJester in thinking the dry clump of DME is the cause. Looks like it acted as an insulator allowing portions of the glass to become extremely hot while adjacent sections were in contact with liquid and still cool. Not saying I wont suffer from broken...

A handy tip I found here a while back: Use the wrench only to hold the nut in place. Keep the faucet attached and use the faucet to tighten / loosen the shank. Once the shank is tight you can reposition the faucet accordingly.
