    thermometer off?

Just an update on this...just measured my first FG for my Cerveza. I recorded the OG at 1.022. The FG was 1.014. I tasted my sample and taste great! It is slightly carbonated and I feel will bottle very well. Think I might bottle next weekend. Thanks for all the help guys! -Lucas

    Man, I love Apfelwein

I was doing a batch in a couple days but really don't want to bottle. If I am not carbonating can I just reuse the apple juice bottles to put the Apfelwein in? Also, is the sugar you use just regular table sugar or do I have to get it at LHBS? Thanks. -Lucas

    thermometer off?

how do I post a picture of the SG scale on my hydro without putting it as a link? The Cerveza recipe was a can of LME, bag of DME, packet of hops and the yeast. The Stout recipe was the same, a can of LME, bag of DME packet of hops and the yeast. For both batches I did partial boils. I got...

    thermometer off?

I knew 2.2 was too high just couldn't figure out whether I was reading it wrong or not. I think I figured out my problem. The SG scale on my hydro starts at the top with 990 then the next mark is 1000 then it goes from there in increments of 10. So with my first batch, the wort was at the 20...

    thermometer off?

I used the hydrometer that came with the kit I got. At first I thought I was reading the wrong gauge because the hydrometer has 3 different things you can read off of but I double checked and that is what it said 2.2

    thermometer off?

Brewed my second batch today. With my first batch I used a meat thermometer and it would not read the wort below about 80 degrees. I went to LHBS and picked up a proper thermometer and still it did not read below 80 degrees, even after an ice bath and sitting in my house (~74) for about 1.5...

    blowoff tube on bucket?

I was going to brew today with a bucket as my carboy is full. Only problem is my airlock broke the other day when I was trying to get the blowoff tube off of it. Right now on my carboy I have a piece of foil until I can get a real airlock but I was wondering what I could do with the bucket...

    Favorite HomeBrew

If you don't mind me asking, where can I find that Fat Tire clone? Had this when I visited St. Louis for a wedding and have yet to taste a beer so delicious and refreshing! -Luacs

how soon can i transfer from primary to secondary?

something i have been wondering is what is the easiest way to check gravity? it seems there must be an easier way than lifting a carboy full of wort and pouring a little bit into my hydrometer flask.

how soon can i transfer from primary to secondary?

Did my first brew yesterday from extract. None of the directions I read said to strain the hops when putting the wort into the carboy. As a result when fermentation began hops have gotten stuck on the upper part of the inside of the carboy and just wondering whether this is bad and if so...

    fast fermentation

5 gallon carboy, 5 gallon batch. Stopped by LHBS and explained everything to the guy and he said you can't ferment 5 gallons of beer in a 5 gallon carboy. Why none of the instructions/books/websites I have read on brewing have not mentioned this I don't know. Seems like an important rule to...

    fast fermentation

I was just examining the airlock when poof! stopper and all shoot off the carboy and i get some volcano action. after throwing some towels down i head to the basement in search of a way to get the current tubing to fit on the airlock when i find some random black tubing that fits perfectly. I...

    fast fermentation

I did my first ever homebrew batch tonight from extract. I pitched the yeast at 8:30 p.m. Put the airlock on (3 piece kind), no blowoff tube because the tubing that came with my kit is just barely too small to fit on the airlock. Anyway, it is now almost 2 a.m. and my fiance and I were awoken...

    gas grill for partial boil?

sorry definitely meant to put this in the equipment section. Anyway, just tried this with about 3 gallons of water and took over 45 minutes to barely boil without a lid. Maybe I'll go with a propane burner with higher BTU output. -Lucas
