    Wiring and Componet selection help

What switches you order depends on how you are wiring it up. For most generic uses you would order a Normally Open(NO) set of contacts. On a 3 position switch (also called a HOA) you mount one set of NO Contacts on each side. When the switch goes to position "A" one contact will close, in the...

Help me identify my 240v plug?

That is a NEMA 6-50. It wouldn't be the first time I've seen some one install a 50 amp receptacle on a 60 amp breaker, and they will even use 8awg wire. Have it checked out to be safe.

    Amp, gauge, duty cycle recommendations

It all depends on your supply. If your plugging into an old dryer outlet that has a 3 wire supply, then you will only have 240 to use. If you have a newer outlet, or are running directly from the panelboard, and have a 4 wire supply then you use the neutral to get your 120v. If you have...

    GFCI options... will this work?

Everything on the supply side is unprotected. If one of the suplly wires shorts to the enclosure, GFCI will not protect you. If you incoming power cable gets exposed (or something cuts into it) your GFCI will not protect protect you. A GFCI Breaker located as far up stream is the safest way...

    Why are controllers so expensive?

here is the commercial equivilent. This is the cheapest around at $119. plus you will have to buy the programing software for $395. You will have to know how to create PLC ladder logic or pay some one to create and install the logic. I work with the Allen Bradly (cost a lot more for the...

Motorized Grain Mill - Drive Shaft Questions

That is the exact type gearbox i thought. A clamp on coupling might work to connect the output shaft to your mill, make sure you order it for the EXACT size shafts. Now for the input, it is what i thought, that gear box is made for a "C Face" motor mount. We use a TEFC motor mounted to that...

control for 120 and 240v system?

OP: The short answer, YES, but it all depends on how you wire it. Birvine: YES, SSR use very little input current(around 0.02 amps), so you can parallel them and not overload the PID.

    GFCI options... will this work?

Never seen that one before, but from the description on Levitons website. It is only rated for 20 amps, but can sense 240 volt. you have to use a contactor to get a higher amp rating. IMO a 'Spa GFCI Disconnect" would be your best option.

Motorized Grain Mill - Drive Shaft Questions

So you have a not so simple problem. The Monster Mill's shaft is designed for a 1/2" drill chuck, not a standard Keyed coupling. you will need to find a Shaft coupling that will be able to clamp on that shaft securely enough to handle the torque. A simple setscrew coupling might not be enough...

    Keg to ekeggle conversion pics

I love seeing what a machinist can build. This is an amazing build. I am going to build a cutting tool like yours for my next keg conversion, looks so much better then my hack job with a plasma cutter.

    Planned simple 1 element build

L630 is a 240v only, if you use the ground as a neutral you will trip the GFCI instantly. the NEMA L1430 is rated for 120/240, it is 4wire(2 hots,1 neutral, 1 ground)

Possible DIY homebrew sensor coming out in the spring!

found a company that makes an RF temp logger for fish/water. they have some products for food. Might be worth a call to see what they can do for a home brewer. It is going on my long list of dream build items. Weetag temperature depth submersible data logger Bullet

Possible DIY homebrew sensor coming out in the spring!

They are just using off-the-shelf technology, integrated in a 'DIY' friendly package. You can easily build one perfect for our needs from OTS parts. the only thing is making it for our small needs is expensive. The existing temp sensors full fill our needs cheaply and efficiently. With...

Joeybeer's Single Vessel 5500w Artsy Build

I'm a little confused by your wood inset idea. are you talking about cutting out part of the SS door and mounting a piece of wood? That would mean you lose any water resistance. You could also have a hard time mounting the switches, since they are usually designed to be mounted to thinner...
