For what it's worth lads, I think my grain bill was pretty spot on. It just lacked the hoppiness, so will up that "next time"... when I eventually get around to brewing things for a second time! I'm still only on #16 life brews
I'll up it to 1lb. Thanks for the feedback! I'll report back on how it turns out. I think I'll do one gallon with a touch of spice (seeds of paradise etc) too...
Very interested to hear how yours turns out. I'll pop another growler this weekend and see if it's any better. I did just invest in beersmith and my IBUs were pretty low... can't wait to try again!
Hi guys, this is my first attempt at a Rye Saison. Any and all critique welcome! You guys are the experts :) It's a 5 gal. extract recipe and crafted using BeerSmith. Tweaked from this https://byo.com/bock/item/2916-rye-saison
OG: 1.049 FG: 1.009
IBU: 26.5
ABV: 5.3%

That makes sense. Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it. Do you think there's too much going on now, so would clash?
8oz Carared
4oz Carafa I (337 SRM)
2oz Caraaroma
1oz Roasted Barley
6lbs XLight DME
1lb Wheat DME
8oz Turbinado
Alternatively I could just use my original recipe and JUST...
That figure was what I came up with on Beersmith, so I'm glad I asked! Thanks! Second draft below -
8oz Caraaroma (130 SRM)
4oz Roasted Barley (300)
6lbs Extra Light DME (3)
1lb Wheat DME (8)
8oz Turbinado (10)
SRM = 15.8. So near the middle of the 11-19 range, and I might add a shredded beet...
Hi guys!
I'm brewing my first Red IPA, and thought I'd just tweak an IPA grain bill I liked.
6lbs Light DME (this was 7lbs in my last non-red IPA)
1lb Wheat DME
8oz Turbinado
and then steep 4lbs Carared.
Beersmith tells me this will come out pretty red, but has anyone done...
Hopefully that's what it is - too cold! It didn't taste bad... but it's hard to tell when it's flat. I had it in an ice bath (63ish) during primary fermentation. I'll update in 2 weeks. Fingers crossed!
(Lol that last part was autocorrected to "Free Nigeria!)
In the bottle for 2.5 weeks, at room temp. The first one I tried at 2 weeks, which had even worse carb. I'm hoping I'll just leave the rest for 4 weeks like I do for all my other brews. They say to drink young, what should I be looking out for as an 'off flavor' at 4 weeks?
If I were you I'd make 4 gallons )or even 5 if you want to use a blowoff tube) - more beer! And just dilute the 16qt wort with boiled and cooled water in the fermenter until you get your desired volume.
I just cracked a bottle of extract only hef with weihenstephan liquid yeast, but it's not...
Hi guys, I'm thinking of making an IPA with 8lbs light LME and 2lbs of wheat LME (65:35), aiming for ABV at about 7%, no specialty grains. I've made a Hef with just wheat LME, but haven't popped a bottle yet so not sure how mouthfeel and head will be.
a steeping grain or mini mash something to...
I usually add a drop of bleach to some cold water, let it sit and the rinse thoroughly with hot water! Easy. Good point too about making your own. That'd be pretty easy and you could beef it up, bristles etc!
