    2013 Hop garden photo thread

Sorry but you are incorrect. Hop Rhizomes should be planted vertically (fresh shoots end up) 1 ~ 2 inches below the surface. Watch the pros do it...

    2013 Hop garden photo thread

Since this spring has been very cold and wet here in Wisconsin (expecting snow tomorow!) I'm starting my hops in planters. I've read I can transplant as late as June, but I hope to do it by mid-May. Here are my four hop crowns from Great Lakes Hops: I've got Rhizomes for three more...

Slim 1/4 keg as mash tun

I'd keep it either to serve out of, or for use as a fermenter, it isn't big enough for the size grainbill you mentioned. Good luck, Keyth

POLL: What type of fermenter do you use?

Glass and Stainless. 6.5 gallon carboys for most batches, stainless conical when I intend to harvest yeast, and sanke kegs for double batches. Keyth

    DIY Fermenter on the Cheap!

+1 (I actually use 1/2 gallon Mason jars...but same idea). You can get a rubber grommet like you get with an ale pale at the hardware store for 20 cents and make it air tight too. Keyth

    Ritebrew.com?

Neil is a good guy, I found them when searching for the phone number of the LHBS, I've used ritebrew.com several times since (just stocked up on base malt ~110 lbs of it in fact). Here in Wisconsin we're spoiled, we've got Northern Brewers, ritebrew.com and a hand full of LHBS to choose...

My Immersion chiller makes me sad

Aside from a pre-chiller, the best way to improve the heat exchange performance of your immersion chiller would be to add a whirlpool stirrer to move the wort through (between) the coils, I've read that it greatly increases efficiency (I'm happy with my 20~30 minutes, so I haven't tried it yet)...

Should I feel guilty buying online and not local?

My conundrum is my LHBS is 1.5 miles from my house and my On-line Supplier is 5 miles from my house (and allows local pickup). There's also another LHBS 20 minutes away...I try to give em all patronage (getting kind of expensive, and what the heck am I supposed to do with all this beer :D )...

    Making the switch, equipment question!

I agree that option 2 affords you the most flexibility and the lowest initial cost. I would still add a braid\valve to the round cooler. Whether you end up batch sparging or fly sparging the goal is the same, consistency. Every setup is going to behave differently, and you simply need to...

    Making the switch, equipment question!

You can definitely get started with just two coolers. I think a 5 gallon cooler for use as a Hot Liquor Tank (HLT), i.e. your sparge water, is going to be very limiting if your kettle is a 15.5 Gallon Keggle. You could do medium strength 5 gallon batches, but you'd be better off with a 10...

    Making the switch, equipment question!

Nope, you mash in the 62 (unless you were making a small beer, then I'd use the 10...less air space...better temp control). You heat up your sparge water in the keggle and put that in your second cooler (whichever one that is based on what you're brewing) then you sparge from that into your...

    Making the switch, equipment question!

I like that sparge gadget (I like all gadgets), but for the cost of that one 10 gallon pre-made mash tun, you could have a 62 quart and a 10 gallon round (for use as a HLT). If you're brewing in a keggle, you're going to try making a double batch at some point and the 10 gallon mash tun might...

Arghhhh! 10 gallons of "band-aid" beer!

2 OZ of what? Yooper, sorry for your loss. I'm just about to take my new 15.5 gal Kettle and Sanke Keg Fermenter for a spin and I read this...shiver. Keyth

    Oatmeal stout recipe?

Yup, dial the black malt way back, 4 oz would be plenty. Take a look at the Yooper's Oatmeal Stout Recipe thread, good discussion on the effects of the dark malts (not to mention a very tasty brew). https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f68/yoopers-oatmeal-stout-210376/ Keyth
