    Bottle bombs?

I just had a bottle bomb. To answer a previous question in this thread on whether it was a firecracker or a roadside bomb, I would say it was more like a firecracker, though more like a muffled pop than any loud bang, more along the lines of taking a brown paper lunch bag and popping that-...

    Albany Ale

9 lbs of grain... seems to be a five gal batch? Assume an 80% efficiency, and an FG around 1.048? (just rough guestimating here, didn't plug into a brew calculator or anything.

    Albany Ale

Finally! An actual recipe! I saw that website, and while its quite cool, I found it quite annoying that they didn't have a recipe on it, or at least something saying "hey we are working on it." It seemed like it was more of a promotion for a beer they were going to release than anything.

Refractometer reporting higher OGs than my hydrometer

I know, I was quite careful with my words ;).

Refractometer reporting higher OGs than my hydrometer

Wow, that's quite a bit. I guess a refractometer isn't exactly the godsend I thought it is.

    In search of yeasts

I just read this book, which goes into detail on how to culture yeast: http://www.amazon.com/dp/0937381969/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 The book goes into more detail on how to produce a healthy culture, but mojzis sums up the process nicely. My only nitpick is that you want sterilized, not...

After a year of brewing AG I'm going back to partial mash

What exactly is all that different about partial mashing vs all grain, in terms of time spent, heat produced, etc. Its eaiser to do higher gravity beers when you are just dumping in some extract. Are you really talking about doing extract brews with steeping? Personally I find most of the heat...

Refractometer reporting higher OGs than my hydrometer

So I recently bought a refractometer. I love the precision of the measurements, and the ability to make multiple readings without losing entire beers. However, without changing my process at all, I am finding that my last two brews have come in at or over the target initial gravity, where my...

    Albany Ale

Hey all, I recently read a lengthy article/recipe on a style called Albany Ale, a style that was brewed up in Albany, NY prior to 1900 or so. I thought I read it in zymurgy a few issues ago, but the archive search is turning up nothing. Does anyone know what I am talking about? If not, does...

    Cheap source of gelatin?

Cool. I will check out the store. I was buying other stuff, and generally it is cheaper to buy stuff on Amazon, especially if you buy in sizes larger than is typically available at a store.

    Cheap source of gelatin?

Hey all, I wanted to try my hand at using gelatin to clear a beer, but was somewhat surprised when I went on Amazon, and saw it was being sold for roughly $20/lb, searching for "unflavored gelatin." A box of flavored jello is about $1.49/3oz, or roughly $8/lb. And often it is on sale for 50...

    Chiller: Immersion vs Counterflow

Couldn't you remedy that by adding hops after cooling? In other words, dry hopping?

    Chiller: Immersion vs Counterflow

dip tube? Do you do siphon from the kettle to the fermenter? I do a heavy pour into the fermenter to increase oxygen flow- I just try to leave the trub at the bottom of the kettle behind.

    Chiller: Immersion vs Counterflow

Can't you clean/sanitize a cfc by running some water and sanitizer through it? Seems pretty simple to me, but maybe I am missing something. Can't be harder to clean than my siphon tubes, which are starting to accumulate gunk that I can't seem to flush out via rinsing. Seems like a small task...
